Chapter 8 - The Fall of the West Side

By morning, the city of Chicago woke up to a seismic shift in its underworld.

The strike at the docks had been a trap set by Dante. While the Lucianos had sent their hit squad to attack his home, Dante’s main force had obliterated their primary supply lines, seized their warehouses, and stripped them of their financial backing in a single, devastating night.

With the failed attack on the Moretti estate, the other families in the Syndicate withdrew their support from the Lucianos. They had broken the oldest rule of the underworld—attacking a Don’s home and his child.

By noon, Marco had brought Bianca Luciano and her father, Don Carmine Luciano, into the subterranean holding facility beneath the Moretti estate.

I stood beside Dante in the monitoring room above the glass-walled interrogation cell. I wore a tailored black wool dress, my hair pinned back, looking every bit like the woman who belonged at the right hand of the most powerful man in the city.

Down below, Carmine Luciano—an old, withered man who had grown arrogant on his past glory—sat cuffed to a metal table, his daughter weeping hysterically beside him.

Dante pressed the microphone button on the console. His voice echoed clearly inside the cell below.

"Carmine," Dante said calmly.

The old man looked up, his eyes filled with pure venom. "Moretti. You think you've won? The Syndicate will never let you control the entire city!"

"The Syndicate signed over your territories an hour ago, Carmine," Dante replied smoothly. "You are broke. You are stripped of your rank. And your soldiers have surrendered to my commanders."

Carmine’s face fell, the last remnants of his pride crumbling into dust. "What... what are you going to do with us?"

"I am giving you a choice," Dante said, his voice flat and unyielding. "You and your daughter leave Chicago today. You go to a small village in Sicily. You will never return to the United States. You will live on a modest pension provided by my firm, monitored twenty-four hours a day by my men."

Bianca looked up, tears running down her crimson lipstick. "And if we refuse?"

Dante leaned closer to the microphone, his eyes dark as midnight. "Then the waitress you mocked in my library will decide your fate."

Carmine and Bianca stared through the glass at me, sitting beside Dante. The woman they had thought was a helpless servant was now standing next to the Don, holding his trust, holding their very lives in her hands.

Carmine bowed his head, defeated. "We take the exile."

Dante clicked off the microphone, turned off the monitors, and stood up. He turned to face me, taking my hand in his and bringing it to his lips.

"It is over, Elena," he said softly. "The war is finished. You are completely safe now."

I looked into his eyes, feeling a strange mix of relief and realization. "So... my debt is paid? I am free to go?"

May you like

Dante’s smile faded slightly. He looked down at our joined hands, his thumb gently caressing my knuckles.

"You were always free to go, Elena," he said quietly. "I kept you here to protect you. But now that the city is safe... the choice is entirely yours."
