Chapter 8 - Unlikely Allies

We escaped Queens using an underground storm drainage tunnel I had modified years ago for emergency exits, emerging three blocks away near the docks where Ray Donovan was waiting with a covered butcher's van.

“Get in! Fast!” Ray yelled, sliding the side door open.

I lifted Margaret and Lily into the back of the van, surrounded by hanging beef carcases and cold refrigeration units. I climbed in after them, slamming the heavy insulated door shut as Ray hit the gas, roaring away into the Brooklyn night.

“Where are we going?” Margaret asked, wrapped in a thick wool blanket Ray had provided.

“To a safe location upstate,” I said, pulling the blue ledger and the USB drives from my jacket. “Ray, do you still have your contact at the Federal Prosecutor’s Office?”

“Assistant US Attorney Sarah Jenkins,” Ray said from the driver’s seat. “She’s been trying to build a RICO case against Marcus Vance for five years. But she needs live testimony and irrefutable financial proof.”

“She’s about to get both,” I said, looking at Margaret. “Margaret, Claire’s ledgers contain every shell company, every off-shore account, and every bribe. But Jenkins will need someone who can verify Claire’s handwriting and explain how the key was passed down.”

Margaret looked at the ledger, then at me. Her pale face showed no trace of the sick, frail old woman I had met twenty-four hours ago. In her eyes burned the fierce light of a mother seeking justice for her murdered child.

“I’ll testify,” Margaret said clearly. “I’ll tell them everything Claire told me. I don't care if Marcus’s lawyers come after me. I want him to pay for taking my daughter.”

“He will,” I promised. “Ray, get us to Jenkins’s private residence in Westchester. We deliver the evidence tonight.”

Two hours later, we arrived at a quiet, gated suburban home in Westchester County. Assistant US Attorney Sarah Jenkins—a sharp, middle-aged woman with intense eyes—was waiting for us in her study, flanked by four federal marshals with assault rifles.

She spent an hour going through the blue ledger and examining the encrypted USB drives on her secure laptop. As the data loaded, her eyes widened in utter shock.

“My God,” Jenkins whispered, looking up at me. “This isn't just Marcus Vance. This goes all the way to two sitting state senators and the Deputy Chief of Police. Claire Vance... she built a masterpiece of evidence before she died.”

“Claire was brilliant,” Margaret said quietly, sitting across the desk with Lily asleep in her lap. “She wanted to protect her daughter.”

“This is enough to freeze every single Vance asset within an hour,” Jenkins declared, her hand trembling slightly as she signed a stack of emergency federal warrants. “We can issue arrest warrants for Marcus and Julian Vance immediately.”

“Issuing warrants won't be enough, Ms. Jenkins,” I said, leaning against the wooden bookshelf, my arms crossed. “Marcus has private jets, hidden airstrips, and millions in untraceable cash. If he hears the feds are coming, he’ll flee the country before your marshals even cross the Manhattan Bridge.”

Jenkins narrowed her eyes at me. “What are you suggesting, Caruso?”

“I’m suggesting we give Marcus exactly what he wants,” I said, a dark smile playing on my lips. “He wants a meeting with me to exchange the child for his freedom. We set the trap. You bring the entire federal task force. And we take him down together.”
