Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Kingdom

Over the next two weeks, I watched the collapse of David’s kingdom from a safe, comfortable distance.
I didn't have to seek out the drama; Scottsdale is a small world for those in the high-end real estate and business circles, and gossip travels faster than a desert wildfire. My friend Sarah, who worked as an interior designer in the area, kept me thoroughly updated.
"Clara, you wouldn't believe the scene at the house yesterday," Sarah gasped over the phone, her voice dripping with excitement. "I was driving by to go to a client’s home, and there was a giant flatbed tow truck parked right in your old driveway. They were repossessing David’s leased Porsche!"
"You're kidding," I laughed, organizing my new design studio.
"I am not! Beatrice was standing on the porch in her floral robe, screaming at the tow truck driver, waving her hands like a madwoman. David was trying to hold her back, looking absolutely miserable in a wrinkled t-shirt. The neighbors were actually coming out onto their lawns to watch the show. It was glorious."
But the repossession of the sports car was only the tip of the iceberg.
Because Beatrice’s family trust now officially held the title of the property, she was flooded with legal notices from the Scottsdale Homeowners Association. The association was notorious for its strict, uncompromising rules. They had discovered that David had built an unapproved luxury pool house and removed three protected desert trees without permits—violations that carried immediate fines of twelve thousand dollars.
When Beatrice tried to explain to the association board that she was "a victim of her son’s financial mismanagement," the board flatly refused to listen. They placed a formal lien on the property and suspended her access to the community’s private water and security services.
By the end of the second week, David’s phone calls to my attorney’s office had turned from angry demands to pathetic, whimpering begs.
"He called four times today, Clara," Marcus told me during our weekly update. "He’s begging for a settlement. He wants you to agree to a post-nuptial agreement where you assume half of the LLC's debt in exchange for him 'allowing' you to keep your design business. He claims that if you don't help him, he’ll have to declare personal bankruptcy."

"Tell him I wish him the best of luck with his bankruptcy filing," I said flatly. "I’m not signing a single thing except the final divorce decree."
"Already did," Marcus smiled. "The court date for the temporary orders is set for next Tuesday. Make sure you wear something nice, Clara. It’s going to be a historic day."
