Chapter 3 — The Divorce That Cost Him Everything

Julian stared at his phone as though the screen had betrayed him.
EMPLOYMENT TERMINATED.
The words refused to change no matter how many times he refreshed the page.
"This has to be a mistake."
His voice sounded weaker than he intended.
Eleanor snatched the phone from his hand.
"They can't fire you without notice."
"They just did."
A black SUV rolled away from the mansion, leaving the legal notice fluttering against the polished marble floor.
For the first time in years, the house felt cold.
Not because of the winter outside.
Because certainty had vanished.
Across the city, Audrey stepped out of the elevator at Vance Global Headquarters.
Employees who hadn't seen their CEO in months immediately stood straighter.
"Good morning, Ms. Vance."
"Welcome back."
"Congratulations on your twins."
She thanked each person with a warm smile.
No one could tell she had spent the previous night holding her newborn sons in a luxury hotel after being thrown from her own home.
She refused to let humiliation define her.
Inside her office, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the skyline she had helped transform through two decades of determined work.
Christian entered carrying another stack of folders.
"Security has completed the preliminary review."
Audrey looked up.
"And?"
"They recovered security footage from the mansion."
She frowned.
"I thought the Ashfords controlled those cameras."
"They believed they did."
Christian slid a flash drive across the desk.
"The property management company retained an independent encrypted backup."
Audrey inserted it into her computer.
The video played.
There she was.
Holding the twins.
Still recovering from childbirth.
Julian shoving her toward the front door.
Eleanor pointing toward the driveway.
The suitcase crashing into the snow.
Then Julian's unmistakable voice.
"If you make things difficult, I'll tell everyone you abandoned these children."
The recording ended.
Silence filled the office.
Christian finally spoke.
"This alone destroys any custody argument he tries to make."
Audrey nodded slowly.
"But we won't release it."
He raised an eyebrow.
"Not yet."
"I want the truth to defeat them."
"Not revenge."
Meanwhile...
Julian stormed into the downtown headquarters of Vance Global.
The revolving doors opened automatically.
He marched toward the reception desk.
"I need to see Human Resources."
The receptionist smiled politely.
"May I have your employee ID?"
He handed over his executive access card.
She scanned it.
A warning flashed across her monitor.
REVOKED
Her expression immediately changed.
"I'm sorry, sir."
"You no longer have authorization to enter."
Julian laughed.
"I was Vice President yesterday."
"I'm aware."
"So call the CEO."
"I'm afraid that's not possible."
"I don't care if she's in a meeting."
"I'll wait."
Two uniformed security officers quietly approached.
"Sir..."
"I'm going upstairs."
"You are no longer permitted inside this building."
His temper exploded.
"Do you know who I am?"
One guard answered calmly.
"Former Vice President Julian Ashford."
The word former struck harder than any insult.
Employees crossing the lobby slowed their pace.
Whispers spread almost instantly.
"Isn't that Mr. Ashford?"
"What happened?"
"I heard compliance escorted him out."
"No..."
"They're escorting him now."
Julian noticed the stares.
For years those same employees had admired him.
Today they watched with curiosity.
No respect remained.
Only questions.
He clenched his fists.
"I'm calling Audrey."
At that exact moment, Audrey's phone lit up.
Julian Calling
Christian looked toward her.
She let it ring.
Again.
Again.
Voicemail.
Seconds later another call arrived.
Declined.
Then a text.
What the hell did you do?
She locked the screen without reading further.
Christian smiled faintly.
"I assume you aren't returning that."
"No."
"He'll have to speak through attorneys."
By afternoon the city's financial circles had begun talking.
Executives noticed Julian's sudden disappearance.
Real estate brokers heard rumors about the Ashford mansion.
Private bankers quietly confirmed that several luxury accounts had been closed overnight.
Speculation spread faster than facts.
No one yet knew the reason.
But everyone sensed something enormous had happened.
Eleanor sat in the mansion's drawing room making frantic phone calls.
One after another.
Friends she had entertained for years.
Women who had praised her charity work.
Business acquaintances.
No one answered.
Finally Margaret picked up.
"Eleanor..."
"You need to tell everyone this is a misunderstanding."
There was a long pause.
"I'm sorry."
"I can't get involved."
"What?"
"Our foundation receives funding from Vance Global."
"If we oppose them..."
"We lose everything."
The call ended.
Eleanor stared at the silent phone.
For the first time in decades, influence had abandoned her.
Late that evening Audrey returned to the hotel.
The twins were awake.
Their tiny hands reached instinctively toward her voice.
She lifted them gently, one in each arm.
"You'll never have to wonder if you're wanted," she whispered.
"You'll never be used as bargaining chips."
"They tried to throw us away."
"They forgot something."
The babies blinked sleepily.
She smiled through tears.
"They threw away the wrong woman."
At that same moment, across town, a courier delivered another sealed envelope to the Ashford mansion.
Julian tore it open.
Inside was a formal filing from the family court.
Petition for Divorce.
Attached to it was a second document.
Emergency Petition for Sole Legal and Physical Custody.
At the bottom was a single sentence from Audrey's attorney:
All future communication shall occur through legal counsel.
Julian read it twice.
Then a third time.
Only then did he begin to understand.
This was no misunderstanding.

This was the beginning of a war he had already started—
