Chapter 3: The Ultimatum

The silence on the other end of the line was deafening. For five long seconds, Julian didn't breathe. When he finally spoke, his tone had completely shifted. The panic was gone, replaced by a chillingly cold authority that sounded exactly like his father.

"Clara, listen to me very carefully," Julian said. "You are not going to do anything stupid. You are a Hale now. Your reputation is tied to ours. Whatever you think you saw on that video, it was an accident. If you try to blow this out of proportion, you will ruin this family."

"Your mother pushed me, Julian," I said, my voice steady despite the roar of blood in my ears. "She pushed your pregnant wife. And your first instinct is to protect her reputation?"

"She didn't push you!" Julian snapped. "She lost her balance! Why are you trying to destroy my family? Is this about money? Do you want a bigger allowance? My father is willing to set up a separate trust fund for the baby immediately, but you need to come home right now and sign a non-disclosure agreement regarding whatever the hotel claims to have recorded."

A trust fund. A bribe. They were trying to buy my silence before they even knew the full extent of what Arthur Vance held.

"Goodbye, Julian," I said softly.

"Clara! If you hang up this phone, if you walk away from this family, you walk away with nothing! Do you hear me? We will tie you up in court for years. You’ll never see a dime, and I will make sure you don't get custody of—"

I cut the call.

My hands were shaking so violently I almost dropped the phone. Maya immediately stepped in, taking the device from my hands and shutting it off. She wrapped her arms around me as I finally broke down, the tears sobbing out of me in heavy, racking waves.

The threat of taking my baby. That was their ultimate weapon. The Hale family had the money to hire the most ruthless lawyers in the country. They could paint me as unstable, emotional, an unfit mother who suffered a "delusional episode" at her own baby shower.

"They won't take your baby, Clara," Maya fiercely whispered into my hair. "Not with Arthur Vance on our side. Not with that video."

"But Julian… Julian is the father," I sobbed. "How could he say that to me?"

"Because he’s a coward," Maya said flatly. "He’s always been a coward. You’ve just been too blinded by love to see it."

I spent the night tossing and turning on Maya’s sofa, my hand never leaving my stomach. Every time the baby moved, a fierce, protective instinct flared within me. I couldn't let these people near my child. If Margaret was willing to push me down while I was pregnant, what would she do to my child behind closed doors? What kind of monster would Julian turn into under his mother’s tutelage?

The next morning, Sunday, began with a knock on Maya’s door. We both jumped. Maya cautiously walked to the door and looked through the peephole.

"Clara," she whispered, turning back to me with a pale face. "It's Charles Hale."

My father-in-law. The patriarch. The man who pulled the strings of the city’s financial district.

"Don't open it," I said, panic rising in my chest.

"Clara," Charles’s deep, booming voice echoed through the heavy wooden door. "I know you are in there. We need to speak. I am alone. No lawyers, no Julian, no Margaret. Just you and me."

Maya looked at me, waiting for my cue. I closed my eyes, taking a deep, stabilizing breath. Arthur Vance’s words echoed in my mind: Wolves do not spare sheep. If I hid behind the door, I was a sheep.

"Let him in, Maya," I said, standing up and smoothing down one of Maya’s oversized sweaters.

When Charles Hale stepped into the modest apartment, he looked entirely out of place. He was a tall, imposing man with sharp blue eyes and a face etched with decades of ruthless business negotiations. He didn't look angry; he looked entirely clinical.

"Clara," he said, nodding to me. He didn't offer a hand, nor did he look around the small apartment with disdain. He simply got straight to the point. "I will not waste your time. I have spoken with the general manager of the Grand Luminary. He is an old acquaintance. While he refused to give me a copy of the footage—citing an executive order from Arthur Vance himself—he did confirm what it depicts."

He paused, looking at me intently. "Margaret acted egregiously. Her behavior was unacceptable."

I blinked, surprised by the admission. "You… you admit she did it?"

"I am a realist, Clara," Charles said coldly. "Margaret lets her personal vendettas cloud her judgment. Pushing you was a tactical error born of petty jealousy. However, the survival of the Hale Group is paramount. Arthur Vance is using you as a pawn to execute a proxy war against me."

"I am not a pawn," I said, my voice rising. "I am the woman your wife assaulted!"

"And you are the mother of my grandchild," Charles countered, his voice remaining flat and unbothered. "Which is why I am offering you an ultimatum. You have two choices today, Clara."

He stepped closer, radiating an aura of absolute power. "Choice number one: you join forces with Vance. You go to the police, you release the video, and you attempt to ruin us. In response, I will unleash a legal scorched-earth campaign. I will file for immediate emergency custody of your child the second it is born, citing mental instability. I will drag your name through the mud, tie you up in litigation until you are bankrupt, and ensure you never work in this city again. Vance may assist you initially, but billionaires lose interest quickly when the novelty wears off. You will end up alone, broke, and without your child."

I felt the air leave my lungs. The sheer malice behind his calm delivery was terrifying.

"And choice number two?" I whispered.

Charles smiled, a humorless stretch of his lips. "Choice number two is compliance. You sign a non-disclosure agreement today. In exchange, I will personally guarantee your financial security. I will purchase a penthouse in your name. Julian will be instructed to be a model husband, and Margaret… Margaret will be sent to our estate in Europe for the next two years 'for her health.' She will not be permitted near you or the child."

May you like

He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a document, laying it on the kitchen table. "You have until 5:00 PM today to sign this, Clara. If it is not signed, I will take your silence as a declaration of war. And I promise you, the Hales do not lose."

He turned and walked out of the apartment, leaving the heavy silence of terror in his wake.
