Chapter 5 - The Shadow of the Syndicate

Forty-eight hours after the night at Luciel, the fallout from the attempted assassination of Richard Blackwood had flattened New York’s financial district like a tactical strike.

Julian Vance was in a federal holding facility, his bail denied due to extreme flight risk. Vance Enterprises had collapsed into bankruptcy, its shares bought up for pennies on the dollar by Blackwood Holdings. Vanessa Palmer, facing twenty years for attempted murder and conspiracy, had signed a full confession implicating six major figures in Manhattan’s high-society shadow syndicate.

Yet, as Richard sat in his master office on the 60th floor of Blackwood Tower, he knew the snake’s head had not yet been cut off.

Marcus walked into the office, his expression exceptionally grave. He laid a encrypted satellite phone on Richard’s desk.

"The line is clean," Marcus said. "It's calling from a private vessel in international waters off the coast of Maine."

Richard picked up the phone and pressed it to his ear. "Blackwood."

"You're a difficult man to kill, Richard," a woman's voice rasped through the speaker. The voice was older, accented with a faint, regal European tilt, and possessed the cold authority of someone who commanded armies from behind silk curtains.

"Lady Eleanor," Richard said, his voice dropping into dangerous stillness.

Lady Eleanor Vance—Julian Vance's mother and the true mastermind behind the Vance family's international financial network. She lived aboard a three-hundred-foot megayacht beyond federal jurisdiction, steering capital through offshore dark pools that funded private military contractors and shadow acquisitions.

"Julian was a fool," Eleanor said coldly. "He used cheap tricks and greedy women. He deserved to fail. But you, Richard... you took eighty percent of my family’s liquid assets in forty-eight hours."

"I took what was used to attempt my murder," Richard replied smoothly. "You should be thankful I haven't dispatched Marcus to your yacht."

A dry, wheezing laugh came through the line. "Marcus is good, but he is one man. You think you've won, Richard? You think you can protect that street rat you've hidden away on 72nd Street?"

Richard’s blood turned to liquid fire. His knuckles cracked as his hand tightened around the phone until the plastic groaned.

"If you touch her, Eleanor," Richard whispered, every syllable laced with absolute lethality, "I won't just ruin your family. I will buy every port your ship tries to dock at, sink your vessel in international waters, and erase your name from history."

"You have twenty-four hours to return the Apex Global shares, Richard," Eleanor snapped, her voice losing its cool composure. "Or the girl dies. And this time, there won't be a soufflé to switch."

The line went dead.

Richard slowly set the phone down. He looked up at Marcus, his face an unreadable mask of absolute, icy rage.

"She knows about Lily," Richard said.

"We have four team members guarding the apartment on 72nd Street," Marcus said instantly. "No one gets within fifty yards without my clearance."

"Not enough," Richard said, standing up and pulling his blazer off the chair. "Eleanor doesn't use hitmen. She uses federal assets she bought ten years ago. Call the pilot. Prepare the helicopter."

"Where are we going, boss?"

"We're going to Maine," Richard said, his dark eyes flashing like lightning. "It's time to show Lady Eleanor what happens when you threaten my family."
