Chapter 10 - The Horizon Above the Loop

The spring thaw of the following year brought a breathtaking clarity to the Chicago skyline. The biting winter winds gave way to a brilliant, sun-drenched April morning that painted Lake Michigan in shimmering shades of cobalt and gold.

St. Michael’s Church—the very same sanctuary where Camilla Ashford’s cruel charade had unraveled in a storm of broken glass and shattered alliances—was filled once more.

This time, however, the pews were not empty.

Two hundred guests filled every single seat, but unlike the elite sycophants and corrupt judges of the past, this crowd was composed of federal judges who valued integrity, social workers who fought for the vulnerable, loyal syndicate loyalists who respected strength, and close friends who had stood in the fire and refused to burn.

There was no riding crop. There were no hidden sedatives in champagne flutes. There was only the soaring, triumphant notes of the organ echoing off the vaulted stone ceilings.

Adeline Croft walked down the center aisle of St. Michael’s.

She wore a gown of exquisite, minimalist ivory silk that caught the stained-glass sunlight with every step. Her hair was swept back elegantly, and on her wrist, beneath the delicate lace cuff, rested a small, understated platinum bracelet set with a single, brilliant diamond.

Waiting for her at the altar stood Enzo Marchetti. He wore a sharp charcoal-tailored suit, his severe expression softened by a look of profound, unwavering devotion as he watched her approach.

As Adeline reached the altar and placed her hand in his, Enzo leaned down and whispered into her ear:

"The perimeter is secure."

Adeline smiled, her dark eyes shining with absolute peace. "Always, Mr. Marchetti."

Father Grant—the same priest who had presided over the chaotic micro-wedding of social workers months prior—smiled warmly from behind the mahogany lectern, his voice ringing out clear and resonant through the cathedral speakers.

"Dearly beloved," Father Grant began, "we are gathered here today not to witness a fragile alliance built on fear, but to celebrate a union forged in truth, tested by fire, and consecrated by absolute loyalty..."

When the vows were exchanged and the simple platinum bands slipped onto their fingers, the congregation erupted into applause that shook the stained-glass windows.

As Enzo pulled her close for their first kiss as husband and wife, Adeline looked past the altar toward the open oak doors at the back of the church. The bright spring sunlight streamed unhindered into the sanctuary, flooding the marble floor with warmth and light.

The past was buried. The shadows were gone. And before them lay a horizon as bright, limitless, and unyielding as the city of Chicago itself.
