Chapter 9 - The Garden Ceremony

The wedding took place on a breathtaking Saturday afternoon in late May.

The backyard of my suburban home had been transformed into an open-air sanctuary. White folding chairs lined the manicured lawn, framed by arches of blooming white hydrangeas and soft fairy lights strung through the branches of the old oak trees.

Eighty guests filled the garden—close friends from my decades of teaching, Chloe’s loyal design clients, Robert Vance and his wife, and a select few colleagues from Ethan’s philanthropic foundation in Chicago.

As the string quartet struck up the processional melody, a soft hush fell over the crowd.

I walked down the aisle on the arm of Robert Vance, who had proudly stepped in as a surrogate family member. I wore an emerald-green silk dress that matched the sapphires in my ring, my hair pinned back with a delicate pearl comb.

Standing at the altar beneath the floral arch was Ethan. He stood tall and steady, leaning slightly on a custom-carved walnut cane instead of his crutches, his face illuminated by a smile so genuine and bright it made him look ten years younger. Standing right beside him as his best man was a young graphic designer from Chloe's firm, while Chloe herself stood beaming as maid of honor, holding a bouquet of wildflowers.

When I reached the altar, Ethan stepped forward, taking my hand in his calloused, warm grip.

"You look stunning, Margaret," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

"Don't start making me cry in front of eighty people before we even say our vows, Ethan Caldwell," I murmured back with a teasing smile, though my own eyes glistened.

The ceremony was short, beautiful, and deeply personal—officiated by a retired judge who had known Robert for decades. When it came time for the rings, Ethan slipped the platinum band onto my finger, and I slid the matching band onto his.

"I now pronounce you husband and wife," the officiant smiled. "Ethan, you may kiss your bride."

As Ethan pulled me close, sealing our vows with a gentle, lingering kiss, the entire garden erupted into thunderous applause, cheers, and the ringing of tiny silver bells handed out to the guests.

Chloe burst into happy tears, dabbing her eyes with a lace handkerchief, while Robert raised his glass in a silent toast from the front row.
