Chapter 2 - The Midnight Interrogation

By 1:00 AM, the opulent wedding ballroom had been replaced by the stark, sterile fluorescent lighting of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's main precinct.

Lily sat on a small vinyl sofa in a private, glass-walled office, fast asleep under Julian Vance’s heavy wool overcoat. Her tiny hand still clutched my index finger even in her sleep, as though she feared that if she let go, the dream of her mother would evaporate into the morning air.

I sat beside her, refusing to let go of her hand for even a second, while Julian stood near the doorway speaking in low, urgent tones with Detective Robert Miller—a veteran investigator with a sharp eye and a reputation for tearing through high-society cover-ups.

Through the two-way mirror across the hall, I could see Daniel and Vanessa sitting in separate interview rooms. Daniel was pacing like a caged animal, his suit jacket discarded, his tie loosened, arguing fiercely with his corporate attorney who had arrived thirty minutes prior. Vanessa sat with her arms crossed, staring silently at the table, looking like a woman watching her entire life implode in real-time.

Detective Miller pushed open the glass door and stepped inside, carrying a thick yellow notepad and three paper cups of water.

"Mrs. Morgan—or rather, Ms. Bennett," Miller said gently, sitting down opposite me. "I’ve reviewed the initial statements, and I’ve had my officers pull the historical medical logs from St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital from five years ago."

"What do the logs say, Detective?" I asked, my voice hoarse from crying.

Miller sighed, looking down at his notes with a grim expression. "According to the official discharge summary signed by a Dr. Arthur Pendelton on April 14th, 2021, you delivered a female infant at 28 weeks gestation. The record states the infant suffered severe pulmonary hypoplasia and was declared dead forty minutes after delivery. The body was remanded to a private crematory facility per Mr. Morgan's signed instructions."

"That's a lie," I whispered, tears burning my eyes again. "My baby was breathing when they carried her out of the room. I heard her cry once—just one tiny, quiet sound before they put the mask over my face and put me under general anesthesia."

"We know it's a lie, Claire," Julian interrupted smoothly, stepping over to stand behind my chair. "Because forty-eight hours after that supposed death, a birth certificate was generated in Forsyth County—two hours north of here—for a baby girl named Lily Morgan. The mother listed on that birth certificate is 'Unknown/Surrogate,' and the father listed is Daniel Morgan."

My stomach turned over violently. "A surrogate? They claimed she was born from an anonymous surrogate?"

"Precisely," Julian explained, pulling a printed document from his briefcase. "Daniel used his position as a major donor on the board of St. Jude’s Memorial to bribe Dr. Pendelton. Pendelton falsified the death certificate in your medical file, declared the baby deceased, and transferred the infant directly into a private neonatal transport unit funded by Daniel's private holding company."

"Why?" I gasped, looking at the sleeping child beside me. "Why would he do something so unfathomably evil? If he wanted to leave me for Vanessa, he could have just divorced me! Why steal my baby?!"

"Because of your grandfather’s trust, Claire," Julian said gravely.

I froze. "What?"

"Your late grandfather, Edward Bennett, established a sixty-million-dollar irrevocable trust when you were born," Julian said, leaning down to look me in the eye. "The terms of that trust stated that upon your thirty-fifth birthday, forty percent of the principal would disburse to you—unless you were deceased or incapacitated, in which case the entire trust would disburse immediately to your surviving biological children, managed by their legal guardian until they turned twenty-one."

The horror settled into my chest like liquid ice.

"Daniel knew our marriage was failing five years ago," I breathed, my mind frantically piecing together the nightmare. "He knew I was going to leave him once the baby was born. But if I died in childbirth..."

"...he would have inherited sixty million dollars through Lily," Detective Miller finished grimly. "When you survived the emergency C-section, his plan shifted. He couldn't kill you without raising immediate suspicion, so he took the next best option: he declared the baby dead to prevent you from accessing the child portion of the trust, kept the child hidden under a fake identity, and waited for the right moment to claim the trust funds through his sole guardianship."

"And Dr. Pendelton?" I asked, my blood running cold.

"Pendelton retired three years ago and moved to a gated community in Miami," Miller said, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "My officers are currently securing a warrant for his arrest, along with search warrants for Daniel Morgan’s primary residence and corporate offices. But Claire... we have a legal hurdle."

"What hurdle?" I snapped, pulling Lily closer.

"On paper, according to state records, Lily Morgan is legally Daniel Morgan's child through a closed private custody agreement, and you are officially declared deceased on her original birth record," Miller said carefully. "Until a judge formally overturns that fraudulent death certificate and orders an emergency DNA match, Daniel’s attorney is filing a writ of habeas corpus to demand the return of his daughter."

"He will never touch her again!" I yelled, standing up so fast the chair scraped against the tile. "I will die before I let that monster take her back!"

"Calm down, Claire," Julian said softly, placing a firm, reassuring hand on my shoulder. "Miller is right about the current legal state, but Daniel’s attorney didn't count on one thing."

"What?"

Julian smiled—a sharp, deadly smile that belonged to a lawyer who had spent a decade destroying powerful men. "I’ve already filed an emergency motion with Judge Harrison of the 2nd District Court. I woke him up twenty minutes ago. We have secured an emergency temporary protection order and an expedited court-ordered DNA swab. Lily stays in your custody tonight at a secure, undisclosed location under police guard."

I looked at Julian, tears of immense gratitude flooding my eyes. "Thank you... oh God, Julian, thank you."

"Don't thank me yet, Claire," Julian said quietly, looking through the two-way glass at Daniel, who was now screaming at his lawyer in the interrogation room. "Daniel Morgan is facing life in prison for human trafficking, fraud, and kidnapping. He is a multi-millionaire with private jets and connections across the globe. He is going to fight like a wounded animal, and this war is just beginning."
