Chapter 7 - The Final Indictment

The federal court in Charlotte was packed to the gills. Media outlets from across the state had camped outside the courthouse steps for days, broadcasting live feeds of the high-profile corruption and domestic violence trial that had brought down one of North Carolina's oldest and wealthiest dynasties.
Inside the courtroom, the atmosphere was thick with tension.
District Judge Thomas sat behind the towering mahogany bench, his expression grave and focused as he reviewed the final sentencing memorandum presented by the federal prosecutor.
At the defense table sat Nicholas and Gregory Ferguson. Gone were the custom-tailored Italian suits and luxury watches. In their place were standard-issue orange jumpsuits, their wrists cuffed to waist chains, their heads bowed in total disgrace. Across the aisle, Patricia sat alone in the front row of the gallery, veiled in black, looking like a ghost haunting her own funeral.
I sat in the center of the gallery beside Abigail, who wore a simple, elegant navy blue dress. Her head was held high, her posture straight, and her eyes clear and untroubled.
"All rise for the Honorable Judge Thomas," the bailiff announced booming through the courtroom.
Everyone stood. Judge Thomas scanned the room before gesturing for everyone to take their seats.
"We are here today for the sentencing phase of United States v. Ferguson Enterprises, Nicholas Ferguson, and Gregory Ferguson," Judge Thomas began, his voice echoing off the oak-paneled walls. "The court has reviewed the exhaustive federal investigative reports, financial audit trails, and the accompanying domestic assault depositions filed on behalf of the victim, Abigail Ferguson."
Judge Thomas paused, looking directly down at the defense table where Nicholas and Gregory squirmed under his stern gaze.
"Over the past three decades," Judge Thomas continued, "this family operated under the delusion that wealth, social standing, and political patronage placed them above the law. They corrupted municipal contracts, embezzled public funds, and believed they could treat human beings—including a military dependent and family member of a serving U.S. Army officer—as property to be manipulated, abused, and silenced."
Nicholas swallowed hard, his hands trembling against his lap chains.
"The court will not tolerate corporate malfeasance coupled with violent domestic intimidation," Judge Thomas declared, raising his gavel slightly. "Accordingly, on the charges of wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and interstate domestic detention under federal military protection statutes, this court sentences Nicholas Ferguson to twelve years in federal prison without the possibility of parole. Gregory Ferguson is sentenced to ten years in federal prison. Furthermore, all remaining corporate assets, personal trusts, and hidden accounts are hereby seized by the federal government to provide full restitution to victims and municipal funds."
Bang.
The heavy wood of the gavel struck the sounding block, signaling the definitive, irreversible end of the Ferguson dynasty.
A collective gasp rippled through the courtroom gallery. Patricia let out a strangled, pathetic sob, burying her face in her hands as federal marshals stepped up behind Nicholas and Gregory, grabbed their shoulders, and hauled them away toward the holding cells beneath the courthouse.
Abigail reached out, taking my hand and giving it a warm, steady squeeze.

I looked down at her, smiling gently. "It’s over, sweetheart."
"No, Mom," Abigail corrected me, looking toward the sunlit courtroom doors where the doors swung open to reveal the bright, clear sky outside. "It’s just beginning."
