Chapter 8 - The Foundation

Six months after Christmas Eve, the Lily Prescott Neonatal Foundation officially opened its doors in Denver, Colorado.
Named in honor of my late sister, the foundation was a fifty-million-dollar state-of-the-art research facility dedicated to providing free medical technology, specialized incubators, and advanced respiratory equipment to underprivileged rural hospitals across North America.
The grand opening ceremony took place on a warm June afternoon under a clear blue Colorado sky.
Hundreds of doctors, nurses, community leaders, and press reporters gathered on the manicured lawn outside the modern glass building.
I stood behind the wooden podium on the stage, wearing a comfortable linen suit. Beside me sat Cassandra, looking radiant in a dark green dress, with Luke and Violet sitting on small chairs between us, wearing matching white outfits.
"Ten years ago," I spoke into the microphone, my voice carrying clearly across the quiet crowd, "I believed that success was measured by market capitalization, public offerings, and the size of an empire. I thought that if I built enough wealth, I could protect myself from the pain of loss."
I looked down at my children, who were watching me with bright, curious eyes.
"I was wrong," I continued. "Real success isn't built in glass towers or corporate boardrooms. It's built in the quiet, difficult moments when we choose love over ambition, truth over convenience, and family over everything else."
I turned, pointing to the massive bronze plaque mounted on the wall behind the stage.
"This foundation exists so that no mother ever has to sit alone in a hospital room wondering if her child will survive because she can't afford a ventilator. Every machine we manufacture will be open-source. Every patent we hold will be free."
The crowd erupted into a long, standing ovation.
As I stepped back from the podium, Luke broke away from Cassandra's hand, ran across the wooden stage, and threw his small arms around my knees.
"Daddy!" he shouted over the applause. "Can we eat ice cream now?!"
May you like
I laughed out loud, scooping him up into my arms and lifting him high onto my shoulders, while Violet ran up to grab my hand.
"Yes, Luke," I smiled, looking out at the crowd, then back at Cassandra, who walked up to join us on stage. "We can definitely eat ice cream."
