Chapter 5 - The War for Cole Urban

The following three weeks were a whirlwind of legal warfare, corporate restructuring, and late-night hospital visits.
Margaret and Paige did not go down quietly. Realizing their financial gravy train was coming to a screeching halt, they launched a vicious PR campaign through local media outlets, alleging that I was mentally unfit due to my traumatic brain injury and that Elena was an opportunistic gold-digger who had manipulated me into cutting off my family.
On a rainy Tuesday morning, I sat in the grand boardroom on the top floor of Cole Urban Development’s headquarters.
Sitting around the table were twelve members of the board of directors, three corporate attorneys, and Marcus. Sitting at the far end, looking disheveled and desperate, were Margaret, Paige, and their high-priced defense attorney, Vance Sterling.
“Members of the board,” Vance Sterling began, standing up and opening a thick folder. “We are here today to petition for an emergency injunction to reinstate Margaret Cole as acting Chairwoman. As evidenced by recent medical records following Mr. Cole’s plane crash, he suffers from cognitive impairment, severe memory deficits, and emotional instability.”
The board members looked uneasy, whispering among themselves.
I didn't say a word. I simply sat at the head of the table, wearing a dark navy suit, leaning back in my chair with my hands folded neatly over my cane.
“Is that all, Mr. Sterling?” I asked when he finished speaking.
“It is enough to prove that you are currently unfit to helm a multi-billion-dollar enterprise, Mr. Cole,” Sterling replied smugly.
I looked at Marcus. “Marcus, please present Board Exhibit A.”
Marcus tapped a button on his laptop. The grand projection screen at the front of the room illuminated.
Instead of medical records, the screen displayed a detailed forensic accounting ledger prepared by an independent audit firm.
“Over the last seven months,” I explained, my voice commanding the absolute attention of every person in the room, “while I was recovering, my mother and sister embezzled approximately fourteen million dollars from Cole Urban’s municipal development funds.”
Gasps erupted around the table. Several board members sat up straight, staring at the screen in disbelief.
“Fourteen million,” I repeated. “Transferred through shell companies registered in Delaware, used to purchase offshore real estate, luxury vehicles, and private legal retainers. They didn't just lie about my wife; they systematically looted this company to buy her silence and fund their personal lifestyles.”
Margaret slammed her hands on the table. “That’s a lie! Those were authorized corporate bonuses!”
“Authorized by whom?” Marcus countered, advancing to the next slide, which showed forged board resolution signatures bearing the names of three deceased board members. “You forged corporate signatures, Margaret. Just like you forged Elena’s resignation letters and bank transfer receipts.”
I stood up, resting both hands on my cane, looking around at the board members.
“Gentlemen, ladies,” I said. “You have a choice today. You can vote with my mother and become co-defendants in the federal fraud indictment that the Attorney General will be filing tomorrow morning. Or you can vote to strip them of all corporate authority, freeze their shares, and assist us in restoring this company’s integrity.”
The lead board member—a seasoned investor named Richard Hayes—looked at Margaret with intense disgust, then turned to me.
“I call for an immediate vote,” Richard declared. “All those in favor of removing Margaret and Paige Cole from all corporate positions and referring their actions to federal prosecutors?”
Twelve hands shot into the air simultaneously.
Vance Sterling slowly closed his folder, looking down at Margaret with a pitying shake of his head. “I suggest we leave, Margaret. We have a criminal defense strategy to build.”

Margaret looked at me, her eyes filled with a mixture of bitter hatred and pathetic desperation. “You’ll regret this, Adrian. You’re destroying your own family!”
“My family is in the NICU at Swedish Medical Center, Margaret,” I said coldly. “Security will escort you to the curb.”
