Chapter 2 - The Shockwave

Ethan stood frozen in the center of the vast, hollow drawing room, his breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. The confident, charming billionaire CEO who had smirked on a wedding livestream three days ago had completely vanished, replaced by a terrified man realizing the floor beneath his feet was caving in.
"Natalie, listen to me," Ethan pleaded, raising his hands in a frantic, desperate gesture. "You're confused. You've been sick! I... I called the hospital! I spoke to your assistant!"
"You called the hospital after you turned your phone off for seventy-two hours to marry your mistress," I said, standing up slowly from the leather chair. Pain shot through my chest, but I kept my posture ramrod straight, staring him down with unyielding eyes. "And when you finally decided to check if I was dead, my assistant gave you the exact answer you deserved: Mrs. Brooks is no longer here."
"Ethan!" Lauren shrieked, tugging violently at his arm, her face red with rising hysteria. "Call the police right now! She broke into our house! She stole my diamond necklaces! She stole my entire autumn collection samples from the dressing room!"
"Shut up, Lauren!" Ethan roared, rounding on her with a viciousness that made her flinch backward. He turned back to me, cold sweat glistening on his forehead. "Natalie, please. We can talk about this privately. What did you do to the house? What did you do to my accounts?"
"Your accounts?" I chuckled softly, a low, dangerous sound that sent a shiver through the room. "You mean the three corporate accounts at Manhattan National Bank that you illegally leveraged against my family's estate? The accounts you used to wire four million dollars to Lauren’s shell company in Delaware?"
Ethan’s eyes widened in absolute terror. "How... how do you know about that?"
"Because while you were standing under a flower arch in the Upper West Side promising to build a future with her," I said, stepping closer to him until he could see the medical identification band still fastened to my wrist, "I was lying on an operating table with my chest cut open, signing my own consent form to stay alive. And the moment I woke up, I handed your entire paper trail over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Attorney David."
"You went to the federal authorities?!" Ethan screamed, his composure shattering entirely. "Are you insane?! That will ruin Atlantic Business Solutions! It will destroy the stock value!"
"Atlantic Business Solutions was built on my family's seed capital, Ethan," I stated coldly. "And as of 8:00 AM this morning, Attorney David filed an emergency freeze on all corporate assets pending a full forensic audit of your embezzlement."
"No... no, no, no," Ethan muttered, clutching his head with both hands, pacing frantically across the empty wood floor. "You can't do this! I am the CEO!"
"You were the CEO," Megan’s voice cut through the quiet as she stepped into the drawing room, accompanied by two uniformed police officers and a tall, sharp-featured man in a dark charcoal suit.
It was Attorney David.
"Mr. Brooks," Attorney David announced, pulling a thick envelope from his leather briefcase and handing it directly to Ethan. "As the legal representative of the primary shareholder entity—the Bennett Family Trust—I am serving you with formal notice of your immediate removal from the Board of Directors of Atlantic Business Solutions LLC, effective immediately, for gross fiduciary negligence and corporate fraud."
"This is a joke!" Lauren yelled, stepping forward, pointing a manicured finger at David. "You can't just kick him out! He owns the company!"
"He owns twenty percent of the common stock, Ms. Miller," David corrected her with an icy, professional stare. "Ms. Bennett owns sixty-five percent. And under the terms of the prenuptial agreement Mr. Brooks signed five years ago, any act of financial fraud or marital infidelity automatically forfeits his voting rights and board seat."
David turned to the two police officers standing at the doorway.
"Officers, please enforce the temporary restraining order. Mr. Brooks and Ms. Miller have fifteen minutes to gather their personal documents and vacate the premises."
Ethan looked around the empty room, looking at the bare walls of the house he had tried to steal, looking at the police officers waiting to escort him out, and finally looking at me.
"Natalie... please," Ethan whispered, his eyes filling with pathetic, desperate tears. "I made a mistake. I was confused. Lauren manipulated me! I love you, Natalie! We can fix this!"
Lauren gasped in utter shock. "Ethan?! What did you just say?!"
May you like
I looked at the man I had spent seven years loving, feeling absolutely nothing inside my heart except a profound, liberating clarity.
"Your fifteen minutes started sixty seconds ago, Ethan," I said softly, turning my back on him. "I suggest you start walking."
