Chapter 7 - The Collapse of Harold Vane

Harold Vane sat paralyzed at the head of the mahogany table, his hands trembling violently as he stared at the highlighted lines of code damning him.

"I... I was managing institutional risk!" Vane sputtered, sweating profusely, his silk tie suddenly looking far too tight around his neck. "The automated algorithm flagged her file as a high-cost liability! If she demanded a specialized anesthesia team outside of normal operating hours, it would have triggered an uncompensated specialty billing tier! I was attempting to enforce standard consent protocols!"

"You tampered with a live medical record to prevent a disabled woman from receiving safe, medically necessary care because you were worried about a billing tier?" Dr. Chen, Eleanor's orthopedic surgeon, roared, slamming his fist onto the table so hard the water glasses rattled. "That isn't risk management, Vane! That is reckless endangerment and criminal medical fraud!"

"It was an administrative action!" Vane shrieked, looking frantically at Richard Vance, the hospital attorney. "Richard, tell them! I have administrative discretion over chart flagging!"

Richard Vance didn't defend him. He slowly pushed his chair back from the table, putting physical distance between himself and the Risk Management Director.

"Mr. Vane," the lawyer said, his voice cold and shaking with legal panic. "You overridden a clinical status entry without the knowledge or consent of the attending physician, resulting in an acute hypoxic event for a newborn infant. You then attempted to coerce the patient into signing a document falsely attributing the delay to her own refusal."

The lawyer turned to Eleanor, raising his hands in a gesture of total surrender. "Mrs. Price... on behalf of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital, I deeply apologize. I was not made aware of the raw audit logs prior to this meeting."

"I know you weren't, Mr. Vance," Eleanor said calmly, adjusting her blazer. "Because Mr. Vane was trying to cover up his crime before your state probation audit next month."

Vane grabbed the edges of the table, his eyes wild and desperate. "You can't prove intent! You can't prove I knew the dispatch ticket would cancel!"

"I don't need to prove intent for a civil rights and medical malpractice suit, Harold," Eleanor said, leaning forward until she was staring directly into his bloodshot eyes. "Under Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act, modifying a patient's medical access based on a disability risk profile constitutes willful discrimination."

Eleanor pulled a second document from her folder and laid it gently on top of the audit logs.

"This is a formal notice of preservation of evidence," Eleanor announced. "Copies of these audit logs have already been transmitted to the State Department of Health, the Federal Office for Civil Rights, and the State Attorney General's Medical Fraud Unit. They were delivered at 7:30 this morning."

Vane's eyes rolled back slightly, as if he were about to faint. "You... you already sent them?"

"Did you really think I was going to come into this room to negotiate with you, Harold?" Eleanor asked, her voice dropping into a soft, deadly calm. "You looked at me on a computer screen, saw my diagnosis, and decided I was just a short-statured woman you could push around, intimidate, and blame for your own incompetence. You thought I didn't understand the system."

Eleanor stood up slowly, relying on her aluminum frame, her head held high and unyielding.

"I understand the system better than you ever will," Eleanor said. "And by twelve o'clock today, you will no longer have a job in it."

The door to the board room clicked open, and two uniformed hospital security officers stepped inside, accompanied by the hospital's Chief Executive Officer, a tall, stern woman named Dr. Margaret Sterling.

Dr. Sterling didn't even look at Harold Vane. She walked straight to Eleanor, extending her hand in deep, profound respect. "Mrs. Price. I am Dr. Sterling, CEO of St. Jude's. I was briefed on the audit logs thirty minutes ago by Dr. Vance."

She turned her icy gaze to Harold Vane.

"Harold Vane, you are suspended immediately from all duties at St. Jude's Memorial Hospital," Dr. Sterling announced, her voice echoing off the glass walls. "Security will escort you from the building. You are not to access any hospital systems, touch any files, or contact any staff members. Your executive privileges are revoked."

The two security officers stepped forward, grabbing Vane by his arms and pulling him out of his leather chair.

"This is a mistake!" Vane yelled as he was dragged backward toward the door, his polished dress shoes slipping on the floor. "I was protecting the hospital! I was protecting the bottom line!"

"You were destroying human lives, Harold," Dr. Sterling said coldly as the doors swung shut behind him, cutting off his frantic screaming once and for all.

The conference room fell into a quiet, reverent silence.

Dr. Sterling turned back to Eleanor, Caleb, and baby Clara. "Mrs. Price... whatever care your daughter needs, for as long as she needs it, will be fully covered by this institution. We will cooperate fully with the state investigation. And I personally promise you that the administrative system that allowed this to happen will be dismantled today."

Eleanor looked down at Clara, who was sleeping peacefully against Caleb's chest, oblivious to the storm that had just cleared above her head.

Eleanor smiled faintly, a warm tear slipping down her cheek. "Thank you, Dr. Sterling. But right now... I just want to take my daughter home."
