Chapter 9 - REAPING THE WHIRLWIND

A year after the arrest.

The news report playing on the TV in the executive suite of Sterling Logistics—formerly Vale International—was quiet, but decisive.

The anchor’s voice rang out clearly:

“In federal court today, Alexander Vale was sentenced to twenty-eight years in federal prison without the possibility of parole for his role in the multi-million-dollar Vale International fraud scheme. His former assistant, Vivian Laurent, was sentenced to six years for felony conspiracy and tax evasion.”

“The judge cited Alexander Vale’s lack of remorse and extreme cruelty toward his victims during the trial.”

“Meanwhile, Sterling Logistics, under the leadership of CEO Clara Sterling, has reported its fourth consecutive quarter of record-breaking growth, cementing its place as one of the most ethically operated maritime shipping corporations in the world.”

I reached over with my remote and turned off the television.

I sat behind my massive mahogany desk—the same desk where Richard Vale had once sat plotting the destruction of my family. On the corner of the desk sat a framed photograph of my father, beside a drawing three-year-old Victoria had made with bright pink crayons.

My assistant knocked softly on the door. “Ms. Sterling? Your 2:00 p.m. meeting with the international maritime board is ready.”

“Thank you, Rachel,” I smiled, standing up from my chair. “I’ll be right there.”

I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass window, looking out over the glittering skyline of New York City. The sun was bright, burning through the morning mist, illuminating the bustling streets below.

I touched the small silver locket around my neck—a locket containing a small photo of my father on one side, and a photo of Victoria on the other.

I had survived the storm. I had defeated the monsters who tried to break me. And I had built a legacy of honor, truth, and love that would last for generations.
