Chapter 10 - The Calm Horizon

The late afternoon sun painted the Boise river in brilliant shades of amber and gold as Maris stood on the private terrace of her top-floor executive suite. The city below her was alive with movement, the automated trucks of Camden Digital Supply moving smoothly through the streets, their routes perfectly optimized, their efficiency unmatched.
Her personal assistant entered the room quietly, setting a single document on the desk. "Ms. Camden, the final compliance reports from the Nevada settlement have been filed. Colton has officially registered his relocation to Texas, and Derek’s probation requirements have been fully satisfied. The accounts are completely clean."
"Thank you, Sarah," Maris said, not looking away from the view. "You can take the rest of the evening off."
Once the door clicked shut, Maris walked over to the glass desk and picked up a small, weathered piece of paper that she kept in her private drawer. It was the old, glitter-starred Father’s Day card from when she was ten years old, the one she had rescued from the trash all those years ago.
She looked at the faded writing: I want to build big things like you, Dad.
May you like
She hadn't built them like him. She had built them better. She had taken the silence, the isolation, and the cruelty of her childhood and turned them into the raw materials for an empire that could never be broken.
The sun finally dipped below the line of the mountain peaks, leaving behind a sky filled with bright, clear stars and a horizon that was entirely, beautifully hers. She stood alone in the quiet twilight, completely whole, completely victorious, and forever free from the shadows of the past.
