Chapter 8 - THE MANHATTAN GAMBIT

The fifty-second floor of the Whitmore Tower in Midtown Manhattan commanded a breathtaking view of the snow-covered skyline of Central Park.

Inside the glass-walled boardroom, twenty corporate executives, lawyers, and board members sat around a forty-foot polished granite table.

At the head of the table sat Victor Laurent.

Laurent was fifty, impossibly sleek, dressed in a three-piece charcoal Italian suit, with slick silver hair and cold, reptilian green eyes. He held a glass of mineral water, tapping his heavy gold signet ring against the glass with a slow, rhythmic clink... clink... clink.

Beside him sat three high-priced corporate attorneys holding thick legal briefs.

“It is quite simple, gentlemen,” Laurent spoke in a smooth, heavily accented French accent. “Whitmore Holdings is unstable. The scandal surrounding Alexander Vane has damaged your stock value by fourteen percent. My firm, Apex Capital, is offering a full buyout of the logistics division at a twenty-percent premium. You sign the transfer documents today, or we unleash a short-selling campaign that will bankrupt this firm by Friday.”

The board members looked at each other in sheer panic. Several began whispering frantically.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.

Daniel Whitmore walked in.

He wasn't wearing his usual corporate navy suit. He wore a tailored black trench coat over an dark charcoal suit, his presence radiating an overwhelming, iron aura of total dominance.

Beside him walked Agent Sarah Martinez of the FBI and Chief Vance.

Laurent didn't flinch. He leaned back in his leather chair, a patronizing smile touching his thin lips. “Ah, Mr. Whitmore. The grieving son. You are late to your own execution.”

Daniel walked slowly down the length of the granite table. He didn't sit down. He stood at the opposite end, resting his broad hands on the polished surface, leaning forward slightly.

“You’re wrong, Victor,” Daniel said calmly. “I’m right on time.”

Laurent chuckled softly. “Do not be theatrical, Daniel. You have lost the voting majority. My proxies control forty-two percent of the board shares. With your cousin Marcus in prison, his proxy votes default to the restructuring committee—which I control.”

“You controlled them,” Daniel corrected smoothly. “Until eight o'clock this morning.”

Daniel nodded to Agent Martinez, who opened a leather portfolio and tossed a stack of certified legal documents onto the center of the table.

“This morning at seven AM,” Agent Martinez announced, her voice echoing in the glass room, “the United States District Court granted an emergency freeze on all assets, shares, and proxy rights associated with Apex Capital, Vanguard LLC, and Victor Laurent personally, under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act.”

Laurent’s smile vanished instantly. His green eyes flashed with sudden, icy anger. “On what grounds?! This is an illegal government overreach! My legal team will have this injunction dissolved in one hour!”

“On the grounds of attempted murder, extortion, and state treason,” Daniel spat, stepping closer to Laurent’s seat.

Daniel pulled a small electronic recorder from his pocket and pressed play.

A high-definition audio recording played through the boardroom’s ceiling speakers.

It was a recording from two nights ago—a conversation between Victor Laurent and his chief security operative, recorded by Vance’s surveillance team outside Laurent’s Manhattan penthouse.

Laurent’s voice: “The deaf girl is the key. Vane was stupid to leave her alive. I want her picked up from the Greenwich school tomorrow afternoon. Take her to the private airstrip in Long Island. If Daniel Whitmore does not sign over the logistics patents by midnight... dispose of the child in the Atlantic.”

The entire boardroom erupted in horrified gasps. Board members stood up in shock, staring at Laurent with absolute revulsion.

Laurent’s face went completely ash-white. His hands trembled as he pushed himself back from the table. “That... that recording is a fabrication! An AI synthesis!”

“The federal judge didn't think so,” Agent Martinez said coldly, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. “Victor Laurent, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit kidnapping, corporate extortion, and racketeering. You have the right to remain silent.”

Four armed FBI SWAT officers burst through the side doors, surrounding Laurent and his attorneys.

Laurent looked at Daniel, his face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated venom. “You think you’ve won, Whitmore?! You think a billionaire can play father to a deaf bastard child and live happily ever after?! My people will rip your life apart!”

Daniel walked right up to Laurent as the handcuffs clicked tightly around the Frenchman’s wrists.

Daniel leaned in close, his voice a razor-sharp whisper that only Laurent could hear.

“If any of your people so much as look at my daughter or my wife again... I won't call the FBI, Victor. I will use my billions to buy every single asset you own, tear down your legacy brick by brick, and make sure you die broke, alone, and forgotten in a maximum-security cage.”

Laurent shuddered, his arrogant composure completely shattered. He was dragged out of the boardroom in shame, his high-priced lawyers scrambling behind him in total disarray.

May you like

Daniel stood alone at the head of the boardroom table, looking out over the snow-covered expanse of Manhattan.

The war that had started eleven years ago was finally, completely over.
