Chapter 9 - The Promise on the Lake

One year later.

A gentle summer breeze blew across the blue waters of Lake Michigan, rustling the white silk canopy set up on the private lawn of the Gold Coast Yacht Club.

Soft violin music floated through the air, playing a gentle classical melody.

The lawn was filled with two hundred guests—city leaders, restaurant owners, university professors, and former coworkers from Calder House, including the head chef who had once told me to breathe in the kitchen.

Standing at the altar under a archway of white roses and fresh eucalyptus was Sebastian Calder, looking unimaginably handsome in a bespoke black tuxedo.

Down the white runner carpet walked three-year-old Lily, wearing a tiny white flower-girl dress and a wreath of daisies in her brown curls. She carried a small velvet basket, tossing pink rose petals onto the carpet with wild, enthusiastic abandon.

And then, led by my brotherly mentor Arthur Vance, I walked out onto the lawn.

I wore a simple, breathtaking ivory silk gown with a long, flowing train and a delicate lace veil.

As I reached the altar, Sebastian stepped forward, taking both of my hands into his. His gray eyes were shining with tears he didn't bother to hide.

"You look breathtaking," he whispered.

"You don't look so bad yourself, Boss," I teased softly.

The officiant stepped forward, speaking words of love, resilience, and family.

When it came time for our vows, Sebastian looked directly into my eyes, holding my hands firmly.

"Maya," Sebastian spoke, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet lawn. "Two years ago, I found a pink blanket on my floor and a baby on my staircase. I thought I was running an empire of steel and stone. I thought my life was meant to be lived alone in quiet offices."

He smiled, his thumb stroking the back of my hand.

"You brought life back into my house. You showed me what true courage looks like. I promise to stand as your shield, your partner, and your equal for every day of my life. I promise to love Lily as my own daughter, to protect her dreams, and to build a world where neither of you ever has to hide again."

Tears streamed down my cheeks, glowing in the summer sunlight.

I stepped closer to him, my voice clear and steady.

"Sebastian," I said. "You met me when I had nothing but a pink blanket, a yellow rattle, and a fear of the world. You didn't just save my daughter—you saw me when I was invisible. You gave me a home, a purpose, and a love so fierce it transformed everything it touched."

I squeezed his hands.

"I give you my heart, my life, and my future. Forever."

"By the power vested in me," the officiant announced, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. Sebastian, you may kiss your bride."

May you like

Sebastian didn't hesitate. He pulled me into his arms, dipping me slightly as his lips met mine in a deep, passionate kiss that brought cheers and applause echoing across the blue waters of the lake.

Beside us, Lily giggled, throwing her entire basket of pink rose petals into the air over our heads.
