Chapter 4 - The Family Viper

The drive back to Westchester was a blur of gray concrete and heavy rain. Daniel arrived at the estate just as the afternoon light was dying, the iron gates opening slowly to admit his vehicle. When he stepped into the grand foyer, he could already hear the loud, aggressive voices coming from the main drawing room.
Frank stood at the entrance of the room, his hand resting casually near his holster, his face tight as he blocked two men in cheap suits from walking up the stairs. In the center of the room stood Carlos Torres, a man with sharp, greasy features, wearing an expensive watch that didn't match his frayed shirt cuffs.
"I know my rights!" Carlos was shouting, shaking a piece of paper at Frank. "Maria is incompetent! She’s in the hospital, unfit to care for her child! As her closest living relative, I am the legal guardian of Elena! You have no right to hold my niece in this house!"
"She isn't being held, Mr. Torres," Frank said calmly, his voice a low warning. "She is sleeping upstairs in a safe environment."
"She’s a servant's child being kept in a billionaire's mansion without family permission!" one of the cheap-suited attorneys chimed in, pulling out a digital recorder. "We are prepared to file kidnapping charges with the state police within the hour if the child is not surrendered to her uncle immediately."
"You won't be filing anything," Daniel’s voice broke through the room like a thunderclap as he stepped into the drawing room, stripping off his wet coat and tossing it to a nearby maid.
Carlos turned around, a smooth, hypocritical smile instantly replacing his angry snarl. "Ah, Mr. Cole! The great Daniel Cole. I am so sorry for the disturbance, sir. But surely you understand—my sister’s unfortunate illness has created a crisis. I am simply here to take my niece off your hands so she isn't a burden to your busy schedule."
Daniel walked past Carlos as if the man were made of glass, stepping directly between him and the stairs. He turned around, leaning against the mahogany banister, his arms crossed over his chest.
"Carlos," Daniel said, his tone conversational but laced with a lethal venom. "The last time you saw your sister was four years ago, when you tried to forge her signature on a quitclaim deed for her house in San Salvador. You haven't sent a single dollar for Elena’s care since she was born. In fact, according to the bank logs I reviewed on my drive down, you currently owe Maria fourteen thousand dollars from a personal loan she gave you to pay off your gambling debts in Queens."
Carlos’s face turned a mottled crimson. "That’s a family matter! It has nothing to do with the law! Right now, I am her legal kin. Maria is in a coma—"
"She’s in an induced sleep for medical recovery, not a coma, you idiot," Daniel interrupted, his eyes flashing with a dangerous light. "And she signed a durable power of attorney and child guardianship declaration three years ago when she started working for my mother. That document names Cole Industries' legal department as the executor of her estate and temporary guardian of Elena in the event of her medical incapacitation."
The two attorneys looked at each other, their confident posture instantly evaporating. "Mr. Cole... we weren't made aware of any corporate guardianship filings—"
"Because your client lied to you," Daniel said, stepping forward until he was inches from Carlos. He could smell the stale cigarette smoke and cheap cologne on the man. "You thought you could use this situation to shake me down for a settlement, didn't you, Carlos? You thought the big, bad billionaire would pay you half a million dollars to avoid a headline about a housekeeper’s child."
"I love my niece!" Carlos stammered, backing away from Daniel’s imposing frame.
"You love money," Daniel spat. "Listen to me very carefully, Carlos. If you or your ambulance-chasing friends file a single motion in court, I will unleash forty corporate attorneys on your life. I will audit your taxes for the last ten years. I will find every illegal bet you’ve placed in the tri-state area, and I will ensure that by the end of the week, you are sitting in a cell right next to Richard Harrison. Frank, escort these gentlemen off my property. If they ever approach the gates again, unleash the dogs."
As Carlos and his attorneys were practically dragged out of the house by the security team, the mansion fell back into its deep, heavy silence. Daniel stood in the center of the foyer, his chest heaving, his hands shaking slightly from the adrenaline. He had spent his life fighting men for power and status, but this was the first time he had fought for a child's safety.
A small, soft sound came from the top of the stairs.
Daniel looked up. Elena was standing at the landing, wearing a pair of silk pajamas that were far too large for her, her small hand gripping the white wooden spindle of the banister. Her brown eyes were wide with fear, having heard the shouting.
"Mr. Daniel?" she whispered, her voice trembling. "Is the bad man gone?"
Daniel’s heart melted completely, the last remaining ice inside his soul dissolving into the warmth of her voice. He walked up the stairs slowly, kneeling down when he reached her level.

"He’s gone, Elena," Daniel said gently, reaching out to brush a dark curl away from her forehead. "He’s never coming back. You’re safe here. I promise."
Elena looked at him for a long moment, then, without a word, she stepped forward and wrapped her small arms around his neck, burying her face into his shoulder. Daniel closed his eyes, holding her tight, realized that for the first time in five years, the big, empty house finally felt like a home.
