Chapter 8 - The Table Built for Joy

Autumn arrived in Pennsylvania, painting the rolling hills surrounding the estate in magnificent shades of orange, scarlet, and gold.
In the grand dining room of the Hill mansion, a historic event was taking place.
The massive oak dining table—a table that had been kept covered in dark cloth for four years—was fully set with silver platters, glowing candles, and bowls of autumn soup.
Tonight, the room was filled with people.
Sitting at the head of the table was Alexander Hill, wearing a warm tweed sweater, his dark eyes sparkling with happiness.
To his right sat Christina, glowing in a green silk dress, a brilliant diamond ring sparkling on her finger.
To his left sat seven-year-old David, proudly sitting in a regular dining chair, using his own spoon to eat his soup, his vocabulary expanding every single day under Christina’s tutelage.
Around the rest of the table sat Christina’s younger brother, Leo—whose spinal therapy had been fully funded by Alexander and who was now walking with a cane—Dr. Aris Thorne, Noah Vance, and several members of the estate staff who had become like family over the past two years.
Laughter, warm conversation, and the clinking of glasses filled the grand room, scattering the last remnants of the cold silence that had once defined the house.
On the fireplace mantle, flanked by fresh autumn flowers, stood three photographs: One of Lauren smiling on a beach during her pregnancy; One of David’s first steps in the hallway with Christina; And a brand-new photograph of Alexander, Christina, and David laughing together on a sailboat in Maine.
"A toast!" Noah Vance announced, standing up and raising his crystal glass.
The room quieted down, everyone looking toward the scarred security chief.
"To David Hill," Noah spoke, his rough voice filled with genuine affection. "The bravest young man I have ever had the honor to guard. And to Christina and Alexander—who proved that love is stronger than any medicine on earth."
"To the Hills!" the table echoed in unison, clinking their glasses together.

David raised his small cup of apple juice, clicking it against his father’s glass with a proud grin. "To family!"
Alexander looked across the glowing table at his wife and son, squeezing Christina’s hand beneath the white linen tablecloth, feeling a peace so absolute it felt like a blessing from heaven.
