Chapter 6 - The Trap

The morning of January 2nd brought a bitter, biting cold to Chicago.

The glass-and-steel atrium of Blackwood Industries’ global headquarters was packed with over three hundred journalists, television camera crews, board members, and plainclothes police officers.

On the elevated stage at the front of the atrium stood a grand podium emblazoned with the golden Blackwood emblem.

Sitting in the front row of the executive section was Malcolm Voss, wearing an immaculate tailored suit, flanked by three high-priced defense attorneys. He had a triumphant, arrogant smile on his face, convinced that his legal maneuvers and public slander over the last twenty-four hours had forced Dominic into a corner.

Beside Malcolm sat Senator Harrington and Arthur Vance, looking nervous as they eyed the dozens of news cameras broadcasting live to millions of viewers worldwide.

At exactly 8:00 AM, the side doors of the atrium opened.

Dominic Blackwood stepped onto the stage.

He was not alone.

Walking beside him, wearing a dark green wool coat, was Eliza. And standing proudly on either side of them, dressed in their neat navy suits, were Alex and Leo.

A barrage of camera flashes lit up the atrium like lightning strikes, accompanied by the chaotic shouting of reporters trying to yell questions over one another.

Dominic stepped up to the microphone. He did not raise his hand for quiet. He simply stood there, his tall frame and icy amber gaze radiating an undeniable authority that gradually brought the entire room into a dead silence.

“Good morning,” Dominic began, his voice echoing clearly through the massive glass building. “Over the last forty-eight hours, there has been widespread speculation regarding the leadership, the financial stability, and the legal ownership of Blackwood Industries following the death of my father, Richard Blackwood.”

He looked directly at Malcolm Voss in the front row.

“Yesterday, Mr. Malcolm Voss issued a statement claiming that my ex-wife, Eliza Sullivan, and my sons, Alex and Leo, are engaging in fraud to usurp control of this company.”

Malcolm leaned back in his chair, folding his arms with a smirking grin.

“I am here today,” Dominic continued smoothly, “to present the complete, undeniable truth.”

Dominic gestured to the massive digital screens hanging above the atrium stage.

With a click of a remote held by Claire Morgan at the side of the stage, the digital screens flashed to life.

Instead of financial reports or corporate charts, a high-definition image of a certified DNA paternity test from the University of Illinois Medical Center appeared on the screens—showing a 99.998% match between Dominic Blackwood, Alexander Sullivan-Blackwood, and Leopold Sullivan-Blackwood.

The atrium erupted into hushed murmurs.

“Furthermore,” Dominic’s voice boomed over the crowd, “I present the original, un-redacted land-trust certificates established in 1998 by my mother, Eleanor Vance-Blackwood, which grant fifty-one percent of voting control of this company to her legitimate male grandchildren.”

Malcolm’s smile faltered slightly, his eyes narrowing as his attorneys leaned in to whisper frantically in his ear.

“And finally,” Dominic said, his tone dropping into a dark, resonant cadence that chilled everyone in the room, “I would like to play an audio recording recovered last night from First National Bank box #408—a recording made on the night of November 14, 1998.”

Dominic reached down and pressed a button on the podium.

The speakers throughout the thirty-story atrium roared to life with the crystal-clear audio of Malcolm Voss and Richard Blackwood planning the murder of Eleanor Vance-Blackwood.

“If she talks, Richard, we both go to federal prison for thirty years... issue with the brake line fluids on the highway can be arranged cleanly...”

The entire atrium went completely, utterly silent.

Malcolm Voss jumped to his feet, his face turning a horrifying shade of purple as his arrogance shattered into pure, wild terror. “Shut it off! Shut that off! That’s an illegal wiretap! That evidence is inadmissible!”

Before Malcolm could take two steps toward the exit, six uniformed FBI agents and four Chicago police detectives stepped out from behind the atrium pillars, blocking every door.

The lead FBI agent stepped forward, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs.

“Malcolm Voss,” the agent announced into the heavy silence. “You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, corporate fraud, and grand embezzlement. You have the right to remain silent.”

The camera flashes exploded into an absolute frenzy as television crews broadcasted the iconic image of Malcolm Voss being forced to his knees in the middle of the Blackwood headquarters lobby, iron handcuffs clicking tightly around his wrists.

As he was dragged past the stage, Malcolm looked up at Dominic, his eyes filled with insane, desperate rage. “You ruined everything! You were supposed to be like your father!”

May you like

Dominic looked down at the ruined lawyer, his amber eyes calm, clear, and entirely free of fear.

“I am nothing like my father,” Dominic said quietly. “And that is why I won.”
