Chapter 10 - The Wedding on the Ridge

Eight months later, late August had painted the Napa Valley in rich gold, deep green, and purple wine grapes.
High on a private ridge overlooking miles of rolling vineyards sat a restored stone estate.
The sky was a brilliant, cloudless blue, the warm summer breeze carrying the scent of lavender, wild oak, and ripening fruit.
Two hundred guests—family, close friends, medical researchers, and the few trusted corporate executives who had stood by Garrett—sat in rows of white wooden chairs set up on the emerald lawn.
At the end of the long floral aisle stood Garrett.
He wore a tailored dark navy tuxedo, his dark hair freshly cut, looking more handsome, powerful, and serene than he had in his entire life. Beside him stood his best man—Arthur, the elderly butler, who was wearing a immaculate suit and wiping a tear from his eye with a silk handkerchief.
The string quartet began to play a soft, breathtaking rendition of "Canon in D."
The crowd stood up.
First came four-year-old Oliver.
He wore a matching miniature navy tuxedo, a tiny red bow tie, and black leather dress shoes. He walked proudly down the aisle, holding a small velvet pillow carrying the wedding rings, grinning broadly at the guests, waving his free hand like a little prince.
When he reached the front, Garrett dropped to one knee, giving his son a high-five. "Great job, Ollie. You nailed it, buddy."
Oliver beamed, standing proudly beside his father. "I’m the ring master, Daddy!"
"You sure are," Garrett laughed, standing back up.
Then, the music swelled.
Paige appeared at the top of the stone steps, leaning on the arm of her father.
Garrett’s breath was completely stolen from his lungs.
She was magnificent.
She wore a custom lace gown that fitted her curves perfectly, cascading into a long, dramatic train that drifted over the green grass. Her brown hair was styled in a soft, elegant updo adorned with white orchids, and her skin glowed under the warm California sun.
As she walked down the aisle toward him, her brown eyes locked onto his hazel ones, and time seemed to stand still.
When her father handed her hand to Garrett, Garrett took it like he was receiving the most precious treasure in the universe. He leaned in, whispering softly into her ear.
"You take my breath away, Mrs. Brennan to be."
Paige flushed, her eyes shining with pure joy. "You look pretty handsome yourself, Mr. Brennan."
The minister stepped forward, his voice warm and resonant over the quiet valley.
"Dearly beloved," the minister began. "We are gathered here today not to begin a story, but to celebrate a love that survived the storm, a love that found its way home through the dark."
The vows were simple, spoken from the heart, without scripts or paper.
When it was Garrett’s turn, he took both of Paige’s hands in his, looking directly into her eyes.
"Paige," Garrett said, his voice deep, clear, and steady. "Four years ago, I thought I lost everything. I thought wealth was my fortress. But you taught me that true strength is found in vulnerability, in trust, and in love. I promise to cherish you, to honor you, to stand by you through every storm, and to spend every day making sure you and Oliver know how deeply you are loved."
Paige wiped a happy tear from her cheek, her voice soft and trembling with emotion.
"Garrett," she said. "You were my first love, my hardest loss, and my greatest miracle. You gave me our son, and then you gave us our family back. I promise to love you, to trust you, to build our home with you, and to never let go of your hand again."
"By the power vested in me," the minister declared, smiling broadly, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. Garrett, you may kiss your bride."
Garrett didn't wait a second.
He pulled Paige into his arms, dipping her back slightly, and kissed her with all the passion, devotion, and joy in his soul.
The crowd erupted into wild applause, cheers, and standing ovations.
Oliver ran forward, wrapping his small arms around both their legs, shouting happily, "Yay! We did it! We’re married!"
Garrett laughed, scooping Oliver up into his left arm while keeping his right arm firmly around Paige’s waist.
Together, the three of them turned toward their guests—a complete, unbroken, invincible family—walking back down the aisle under a shower of white rose petals and warm golden sunlight.
As they reached the end of the aisle, Oliver looked up at Garrett, his big hazel eyes sparkling with happiness.
"Daddy?" Oliver asked.
"Yes, Ollie?" Garrett smiled down at his son.
"Are we going on a metal bird again?"
May you like
Garrett looked at Paige, who was laughing, her hand resting against his chest, her diamond ring catching the California sun.
"No, Ollie," Garrett said, pressing a gentle kiss against his son’s forehead, then kissing his wife’s soft lips once more. "We don't need to fly anymore, buddy. We’re already right where we belong."
