Chapter 9 - The Family We Choose

Two years later, winter had returned to Columbus, but the cold held no power over the Caldwell and Bennett families.

On Christmas Eve, the snow fell softly over the rolling hills of Lake Forest, coating the oak trees in a peaceful blanket of white.

Inside Ethan’s sprawling, beautifully decorated home, a massive evergreen tree stood in the living room, glowing with thousands of warm golden lights and handmade ornaments.

A roaring fire crackled in the stone fireplace, filling the room with the fragrant smell of pine and cedar wood.

Around the long dining room table, eight people sat laughing and passing dishes of roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, and warm dinner rolls.

Mark sat at the head of the table beside Grace Mitchell, whom he had been happily dating for the past year. Across from them sat several close friends from the foundation, along with Lily, who was now eleven years old and thriving as an honor student and talented young artist.

At the other end of the table sat Ethan.

He held a glass of sparkling cider, looking around the table at the faces of the people he loved.

There were no formal corporate speeches. No cold photos besiding numbers. Just genuine laughter, warm food, and the unbreakable bond of a family that had been built out of courage and second chances.

Mark raised his glass, tapping it gently with his fork.

“I’d like to make a toast,” Mark announced, looking around the warm room. “To Christmas Eve. To the night that brought us all together.”

Mark looked at Ethan, his eyes shining with deep affection.

“Four years ago, I thought my life was over,” Mark said softly. “I thought I was alone in the dark. But Ethan showed me that angels don't always come with wings—sometimes they come in a black sedan on a snowy street, willing to stop when everyone else drives by.”

“To Ethan!” the table chorused together, raising their glasses high.

Ethan smiled, his heart overflowing with a warmth he had thought he would never feel again. “To family,” Ethan replied, his voice rich and steady. “The family we are given, and the family we choose.”
