Chapter 10 - The Warmth of the House

The late September evening sun of 2027 cast a long, golden light across the manicured lawns of the Gold Coast estate, turning the brick walls of the grand mansion into a sheet of polished copper.
Inside the main house, the grand chandeliers were illuminated, their soft light reflecting off the pristine marble floors of the hallway. The scent of roasted chicken, fresh herbs, and pumpkin pie filled the air, rich and heavy with the promise of a quiet family dinner.
In the master laundry room, the tile floor was perfectly dry, the brass faucets polished until they gleamed like gold.
Daniel stood by the doorway, wearing a soft gray cashmere sweater and jeans, his arms folded across his chest as he looked inside.
Lily was standing on a low wooden step stool in front of the massive luxury washing machine, her sleeves rolled up to her elbows, her little hands carefully placing a single, pristine white dress shirt into the drum. The shirt was flawless, its collar pressed, its fabric clean of every mark, coffee stain, or corporate blemish.
"I wash good, Mr. Daniel?" Lily asked, turning her head to look at him over her shoulder, her wide brown eyes shining with a mischievous, happy light.
Daniel walked into the room, lowering himself onto one knee beside the step stool. He didn't care about his cashmere sweater or the dust on the floorboards. He reached out and gently tapped her small, button nose with his finger, making her let out a bright, ringing giggle that filled the entire hallway with sound.
"You wash better than anyone in Chicago, Lily," Daniel said, his voice filled with a deep, unassailable warmth that had completely erased the silence of his father’s old house.
Grace walked into the room, wearing a soft cream dress, her hair pinned back with a small silver clip Daniel had given her for her birthday. She looked down at the two of them, her hand resting affectionately on Daniel’s shoulder as he stood up.
"Dinner is ready, you two," Grace said, her smile radiant under the laundry room light. "Marcus is already at the table, and he says if we don't get there in two minutes, he's going to eat all the potatoes."
"No! My potatoes!" Lily screamed, jumping down from the step stool and racing down the hallway, her small white sneakers loud and happy against the hardwood floor.
Daniel watched her run, then turned to Grace, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her close against his chest. He looked down into her brown eyes, seeing the reflection of a future they had built together out of a blue folder and a child’s raw courage.
"Thank you, Grace," Daniel whispered, pressing a soft kiss against her forehead.
"For what, Daniel?"

"For showing me that a house isn't finished until it has a song inside it," he said, taking her hand as they walked together down the long, bright hallway toward the dining room.
The windows of the mansion were open to the autumn breeze, but the cold could no longer reach them. The stains of the past had been completely scrubbed away, and the table was set for three. They were home.
