Chapter 10 - The Promise of the Sound

The afternoon sun began to set over the Long Island Sound, painting the water in shades of brilliant gold, violet, and deep, fiery orange. The courtyard of the academy had emptied out, leaving only the quiet rush of the wind through the maple trees and the distant, rhythmic lap of the waves against the stone pier.
Dante and Sarah walked together down the long gravel path that led toward the private beach of the estate. Emily ran ahead of them, chased by a massive, gentle black retriever named Nero, whom Dante had bought for her sixth birthday. Her laughter floated back to them through the warm spring air, clear, strong, and completely free of the rattling pain that had once terrified her mother in the dark.
Caleb stopped on the edge of the stone pier, his hand locked firmly within Sarah’s. He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small, velvet-lined box he had kept inside his private vault for seven long years. He opened it, revealing a simple, ancient ring made of solid platinum, set with a single, flawless green emerald—the exact color of the eyes they shared.
“I bought this the week before you left, Sarah,” Dante said, his voice dropping into a thick, emotional whisper as he took her hand, his large fingers steady as he slid the ring onto her finger. “I thought I lost the right to give it to you. I thought my world had destroyed the only beautiful thing I ever held. But you brought it back to me. You and Emily.”
Sarah looked down at the ring, the emerald catching the last rays of the setting sun, glowing like a living leaf in the dark. She looked up into his eyes, her face radiant with a peace that would last forever.
“Your world didn't destroy me, Dante,” she said softly, her hand coming up to rest against his sharp cheekbone. “It just took us a little longer to find the right map. But we’re home now.”

Out on the sand, Emily had stopped running. She stood near the water’s edge, looking back at them with a huge, gap-toothed smile, her hand waving them down toward the shore. “Come on, Mom! Come on, Dad! The stars are coming out!”
Dante smiled, wrapping his arm around Sarah’s shoulders as they stepped down from the stone pier onto the warm, soft sand, heading toward their daughter. The young billionaire had once ruled an empire of glass and cold discipline, but standing here under the open sky, surrounded by the people who held his soul, he realized he hadn't lost a thing. He had simply traded the skyline of Manhattan for the horizon of a true home—a place where the dead past had stopped breathing, and their beautiful, endless future had finally, wonderfully begun.
