Chapter 5 - The Gala of Reckoning

Three days later, Charlotte was hosting the annual North Carolina Business Leadership Gala—the most prestigious charity event of the year, held at the grand ballroom of the Ritz-Carlton.

Ethan had originally planned to skip the event entirely, but Marcus had insisted via secure text that Ethan’s absence was causing serious panic among major shareholders.

Ethan agreed to attend for one hour. Just long enough to show his face, reassure the board, and silence Vanessa Whitmore’s rumors.

Before leaving for the gala, Ethan spent the morning working with Hannah at the cart.

"I won't be able to help with the evening cleanup today, Hannah," Ethan said as he prepped the chicken marinades. "I have... an obligation tonight."

Hannah smiled, wiping her hands on her apron. "It's fine, Ethan. You've worked ninety hours this week. Go take care of your personal stuff. But you better be here tomorrow at five AM, or I'm docking your thirty dollars."

"I'll be here," Ethan said, looking deeply into her eyes. "I promise."

He kissed her forehead—a gentle, lingering kiss that made Hannah’s cheeks flush a deep, soft pink.

By seven o'clock that evening, Ethan Caldwell had transformed back into the billionaire titan of Charlotte.

He stood in his penthouse suite, stepping into a bespoke black tuxedo, styling his hair, and shaving his beard down to a clean, immaculate jawline. The thrift-store coat and scuffed boots were gone, replaced by a fifty-thousand-dollar Swiss watch and polished leather shoes.

When his driver pulled the black Maybach up to the carpeted entrance of the Ritz-Carlton, camera bulbs flashed instantly. Reporters surged against the velvet ropes.

"Mr. Caldwell! Is it true Caldwell Meridian is acquiring Sterling Group?"

"Ethan! Where have you been for the last two months?!"

Ethan walked past the press with cool, effortless authority, entering the grand ballroom lit by crystal chandeliers and filled with Charlotte’s highest society.

Within minutes, Vanessa Whitmore appeared at his side, wearing a floor-length red silk gown and holding a champagne flute.

"Ethan," Vanessa purred, her eyes scanning his sharp tuxedo with predatory satisfaction. "You look remarkably polished for a man rumored to be living in a cave in the Alps."

"Vanessa," Ethan said coldly, stepping back from her touch. "I hope you enjoyed spreading your stories. My legal team will be reviewing your non-disclosure agreement tomorrow morning."

Vanessa’s smile tightened into a vicious sneer. "Don't play high and mighty with me, Ethan. You think you're better than everyone in this room? You're just a bank account wrapped in expensive wool."

Meanwhile, three miles away, fate was setting its trap.

Hannah’s food cart had suffered a sudden electrical failure in its refrigeration unit. Desperate to save three hundred dollars' worth of fresh organic meat, Hannah had loaded the cooler boxes into her old pickup truck and driven toward the Ritz-Carlton, where her friend Sarah worked as a night catering manager in the hotel’s service kitchen.

Sarah had offered to store Hannah’s meat in the hotel’s massive walk-in freezers overnight.

Hannah walked through the service entrance of the Ritz-Carlton, wearing her work jeans, denim shirt, and boots, carrying a heavy plastic crate of chicken.

She navigated the bustling back corridors, surrounded by waiters carrying silver trays of caviar and champagne toward the grand ballroom doors.

As she passed the double oak doors leading into the main ballroom, a waiter stepped out hastily, pushing the heavy door open.

Hannah caught a glimpse of the glittering crowd inside.

And then her heart completely stopped beating.

Standing in the center of the ballroom, illuminated by crystal lights, surrounded by news crews and wealthy socialites, was the most powerful man in the room.
