Chapter 6 - The Quiet Frontier

Life in the mountains was a stark contrast to the opulence of Bellhaven. There were no black SUVs, no high-rise office towers, no board meetings. There was only the wood-burning stove, the endless expanse of pine forests, and the struggle to survive.

But for the first time, they were truly free.

Daniel taught Caleb how to trap, how to read the terrain, and how to fix a generator with nothing but a pair of pliers and a piece of wire. Claire, in turn, learned how to thrive in the silence. She let go of the need for control, the need to manage every outcome, and simply existed.

Emma, too, flourished. She learned to navigate the rugged landscape with a confidence that stunned even Daniel. She climbed rocks, felt the texture of the bark, and listened to the wind in the pines, her world expanding beyond anything she had known in the city.

They were a family—a broken, mismatched, unconventional family, but a family nonetheless.

But the fear never fully vanished. Every time a car drove down the gravel road, every time the wind picked up and mimicked the sound of an engine, Daniel was on edge.

One afternoon, months later, Claire found Daniel sitting on the porch, looking out at the mountains. He was holding a small wooden carving of a bird—something Caleb had made.

"Do you ever think about them?" she asked, sitting down beside him. "The people who came for you?"

"Every day," he said, not looking at her. "I wonder if they're still looking. I wonder if this peace is just the eye of the storm."

"And if they are?"

Daniel finally turned to her, his gaze intense. "Then I’ll be ready. I’m not running anymore, Claire. I’m standing my ground. For you, for Caleb, and for Emma."
