Chapter 9 - The Reckoning of the Past

Two months later, the final legal battle of the Grant empire was quietly settled in a windowless courtroom at the Cook County Courthouse.

Julian Vance and his co-conspirators had pleaded guilty to charges of wire fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit child endangerment. They were sentenced to federal prison terms ranging from eight to fifteen years.

After the sentencing hearing concluded, Alexander walked out onto the steps of the courthouse into the bright July sunshine.

Marcus Vance was waiting for him near the bottom of the steps, holding two iced coffees.

"It’s completely finished, Alex," Marcus said, handing him a cup. "The court has finalized the legal restoration of Leo’s name. He’s officially Leo Grant-Alden now."

Alexander took a sip of the coffee, looking out over the bustling city street. "And my father’s trust?"

"Fully dissolved," Marcus replied. "Every remaining dollar has been transferred to the pediatric housing units at Northwestern. Old Arthur Grant’s name has been removed from every building in the city."

Alexander let out a long, slow breath. The heavy weight that had rested on his chest for fifteen years seemed to lift completely, dissolving into the warm summer breeze.

"How is she doing with the new prosthetic?" Marcus asked warmly.

Alexander smiled, his eyes lighting up. "Dr. Vance said she walked half a mile without her crutches yesterday afternoon. She’s planning to take Leo to Michigan next week to show him where he was born."

"And you?" Marcus asked, eyeing his long-time friend with a knowing smirk. "Are you invited to Michigan?"

Alexander looked down at his shoes, a faint, hopeful flush appearing on his cheeks.

"She asked me to drive the car," Alexander admitted softly.

Marcus chuckled, clapping a broad hand against Alexander’s shoulder. "Then I suggest you don't keep her waiting, boss."
