Chapter 10 — The Boy They Couldn’t Afford to Lose

The elevator doors had not fully opened before Adrian Bennett was already moving.
"Bring every available security team online," he ordered, striding through the lobby with Olivia beside him. "Notify the airport authority, the harbor patrol, state police, and every private security contractor we work with. Nobody leaves Boston with that child."
His chief of security spoke into his headset without missing a step.
"Yes, sir."
Olivia could barely breathe.
"There has to be some mistake," she whispered. "Noah wouldn't go with a stranger."
Adrian glanced at her.
"He wouldn't."
"Then how—"
"They didn't ask him."
The words landed like ice.
"They convinced him they were supposed to take him."
Olivia's knees weakened.
"They pretended to be doctors."
Adrian nodded.
"Professionals always attack where trust is strongest."
Boston Children's Hospital was already surrounded by flashing police lights when they arrived.
Nurses hurried through the corridors, some crying openly.
The pediatric wing had become a crime scene.
Detective Elena Ruiz met them outside Noah's room.
"We've reviewed the security footage," she said.
She held out a tablet.
The video showed a man in blue medical scrubs wheeling Noah down the hallway.
Noah looked sleepy.
Calm.
He even waved at one of the nurses.
The nurse smiled back.
No one stopped them.
Olivia covered her mouth.
"Oh, Noah..."
Detective Ruiz paused the video.
"The kidnapper wore a surgical mask and a hospital ID badge."
"Fake?" Adrian asked.
"Very good fake."
She enlarged the image.
"The badge belonged to a real doctor."
"Who was in surgery at the time."
Someone had copied it perfectly.
Olivia kept watching.
Again.
Again.
Again.
Then she frowned.
"Wait."
Everyone turned toward her.
"What?" the detective asked.
"The blanket."
Ruiz blinked.
"What about it?"
Olivia pointed to the screen.
"That's Noah's dinosaur blanket."
"Yes."
"He never lets anyone fold it."
Silence.
Adrian looked closer.
The blanket had been folded neatly across Noah's lap.
Perfectly.
Almost...
Too perfectly.
Olivia shook her head.
"Noah hates it folded."
"He says the dinosaur gets trapped."
The detective rewound the footage.
"If the blanket was folded..."
Olivia finished the thought.
"...someone who didn't know Noah folded it."
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"The real nurses wouldn't."
"No."
"They know he always carries it over his shoulder."
The detective immediately turned to another officer.
"Find every camera that shows the blanket before they left the room."
Minutes later...
A different angle appeared.
Room 412.
Two minutes before the kidnapping.
A nurse entered with medication.
Noah was laughing.
His blanket rested exactly where Olivia described—wrapped around his shoulders.
Then the fake doctor entered.
He smiled.
He spoke softly.
Noah climbed into the wheelchair.
The stranger folded the blanket.
It was such a tiny detail that nobody else had noticed.
Nobody except Noah's mother.
Detective Ruiz folded her arms.
"You've got remarkable instincts."
Olivia managed a weak smile.
"I've only got one child."
"You notice everything."
Adrian quietly added,
"That's why they're afraid of her."
The hospital administrator hurried toward them.
"We found something."
He handed Detective Ruiz a plastic evidence bag.
Inside...
A juice box.
Apple juice.
Half empty.
"It was left beside Noah's bed."
Olivia stared.
"He doesn't drink apple juice."
Everyone looked at her.
"He can't."
"He's allergic to apples."
The administrator's face turned pale.
"Our records say grape juice."
"They do."
Olivia nodded.
"Someone brought that in."
Detective Ruiz immediately sent it for testing.
"If there's a sedative..."
Adrian didn't finish the sentence.
He didn't have to.
An hour later...
The laboratory called.
"There was a sedative."
The detective closed her eyes.
"They drugged him."
Olivia looked as though the world had collapsed.
Adrian placed a steady hand on her shoulder.
"We're going to find him."
"How can you know that?"
"Because they made one mistake."
She looked up.
"They're using Noah."
"They need him alive."
Back at Harbor Financial Tower, Adrian gathered every executive.
No excuses.
No delays.
Everyone sat around the long walnut conference table.
Thirty-two executives.
Thirty-two worried faces.
Adrian stood silently until the room became completely still.
Then he placed Noah's dinosaur blanket on the table.
Every head turned.
"My company has been robbed."
He looked around the room.
"My accounting system was manipulated."
"My archives were burned."
"My witnesses were threatened."
His voice grew colder.
"And now..."
"...an eight-year-old boy has been kidnapped."
Nobody spoke.
Adrian rested both hands on the table.
"I no longer care about the money."
A murmur spread through the room.
"I care about who decided a child was an acceptable bargaining chip."
Near the end of the table sat Chief Financial Officer Gregory Shaw.
Impeccable suit.
Silver hair.
Perfect posture.
He spoke calmly.
"Adrian, perhaps we should let law enforcement—"
"No."
Gregory blinked.
"No?"
Adrian looked directly at him.
"You've advised patience for six months."
"You've explained every missing transaction."
"You've dismissed every concern."
Gregory remained composed.
"Because the evidence has always been incomplete."
Adrian nodded slowly.
"You're right."
He pressed a button on the conference table.
A screen descended.
An image filled the room.
The mysterious man with the black umbrella.
Then another photograph.
And another.
Twelve in total.
Silence spread across the room.
"Does anyone recognize him?"
Nobody answered.
Then...
Olivia, who had quietly entered with Detective Ruiz, looked around the room.
Her eyes stopped on Gregory.
She frowned.
"What is it?" Adrian asked.
"I've seen that expression."
Gregory forced a smile.
"I'm sorry?"
Olivia looked uncertain.
"I cleaned luxury hotels for twelve years."
"People who are nervous usually avoid eye contact."
"You aren't."
Gregory laughed softly.
"Is that supposed to mean something?"
She shook her head.
"It means..."
"...you're looking at the wrong person."
Confused faces filled the room.
Olivia slowly walked toward the projected photographs.
She pointed at the black umbrella.
"Everyone keeps watching him."
"That's what he wants."
She pointed instead to a reflection in a nearby window captured in one of the images.
Barely visible.
A woman.
Holding a red leather notebook.
The same notebook appeared in six photographs.
Always reflected.
Never obvious.
Detective Ruiz leaned closer.
"My God..."
The room fell silent.
Because the woman with the notebook wasn't an outsider.
She appeared in today's meeting.
She sat only three seats away from Gregory.
Corporate legal counsel...
Vanessa Price.
Vanessa's face drained of color.
"I... I've never seen those pictures before."
Olivia looked at Adrian.
"I think..."
"...the man with the umbrella was never the leader."
"He was watching."
"The woman was giving instructions."
Vanessa suddenly stood.
"This is ridiculous."
She grabbed her handbag.
"I'm leaving."
"No," Detective Ruiz said.
"I'm afraid you aren't."
For one split second...
Vanessa's calm mask disappeared.
She bolted toward the emergency exit.
Officers shouted.
The chase exploded through the executive floor.
Olivia stood frozen as footsteps thundered through the corridor.
Then—
A single gunshot echoed somewhere below.
Everyone stopped breathing.
Seconds later, Detective Ruiz's radio crackled.
"Suspect in custody."
A pause.
"She's alive."
Another pause.
"But she keeps repeating the same sentence."
Ruiz frowned.
"What sentence?"
The officer answered,
"'You're too late. The boy is already on the water.'"
Olivia's heart sank.
Boston Harbor stretched for miles.
Hundreds of boats.
Thousands of containers.
If Noah had already been taken offshore...
Finding him would become almost impossible.
Adrian looked out the conference room windows toward the gray Atlantic beyond the city skyline.
Then he turned back to Olivia.
His voice was calm, but his eyes burned with determination.
"They think they bought themselves time."
He picked up his car keys.
"They forgot something."
"What?"
He gave the faintest smile.
"They've never been chased by someone with nothing left to lose."
As police helicopters roared toward the harbor, Olivia clutched Noah's dinosaur blanket to her chest.
For the first time since the nightmare began, she allowed herself one fragile belief.
May you like
Her son was still alive.
And somewhere beyond the waves, he was waiting for them to find him.
