Chapter 1 - The Anatomy of a Raging Fire

The crystal chandelier above the Astoria Grand ballroom didn’t merely break; it exploded into a cascade of diamond-bright shards that rained down upon the silk-draped tables and tuxedo-clad elites. Panic, primal and instantaneous, swallowed the room whole. Screams tore through the air, vibrating against the Italian marble walls, blending with the steady, dull thud-thud-thud of suppressed 9mm rounds tearing into plaster.
Dominic Castellano’s pulse didn’t spike. Adrenaline was an old, familiar friend, a cold clarity that slowed the world down until bullets seemed to crawl through the air like fat insects. His dark eyes flicked across the chaotic sea of panicked bodies, assessing threats, mapping exit vectors, and calculating the exact distance to the reinforced service corridor.
His men were pinned by the sudden surge of the Torres faction’s assault team. Four men in faux-catering uniforms were systematically sweeping the perimeter, their weapons leveled at any moving target.
Dominic’s boots hit the floor, his stride long and lethal, when a flash of movement near the floral displays caught his periphery.
Amelia.
She was kneeling amidst a sea of crushed white orchids, her hands pressed tightly over her ears, her black work dress stained with spilled champagne and glass dust. She wasn't running. Terror had rooted her to the spot, turning her into an easy target for a gunman who had just swung his assault rifle in her direction.
Dominic didn't debate the calculus of survival. A voice in the back of his mind—cold, logical, protective of his twelve-billion-dollar empire—screamed at him to keep moving. A boss doesn’t risk his life for a florist.
He crossed the remaining fifteen feet in less than two seconds.
His shoulder slammed into Amelia’s ribs, taking her down behind a heavy, reinforced marble pillar just as a volley of rounds shredded the upholstery of the chairs behind them. She gasped, the wind knocked completely out of her lungs, her body collapsing against the solid, immovable wall of his chest.
“Stay down,” Dominic ordered, his voice dropping into that low, absolute register that made grown men tremble.
Her hazel eyes, wide and luminous with unadulterated fear, locked onto his. A thin line of blood trickled from a shallow cut on her cheekbone, bright against her pale skin. She was shivering, not from the cold, but from the brutal proximity of death.
“They’re coming,” she whispered, her voice shaking violently.
“Let them come,” Dominic replied.
He drew his custom-weighted Sig Sauer from its shoulder holster, the steel catching the dim emergency lighting. Without breaking eye contact with her, he reached out, blind-fired around the corner of the pillar, and put two rounds squarely into the chest of the nearest gunman. The man dropped instantly.
The remaining three attackers shifted their focus toward the pillar, pouring suppressive fire into the marble. Stone chips sprayed over Dominic’s shoulders, stinging his skin.
He didn't blink. His left arm wrapped tightly around Amelia’s waist, shielding her body entirely with his own, while his right hand worked the slide of his weapon with lethal precision.

In that thirty-second eternity of smoke, cordite, and shattering stone, Dominic Castellano realized something terrifying. He wasn't just protecting a civilian. Every instinct in his blood was screaming to destroy anyone who even looked at her.
And that was a weakness that would get them both killed.
