CHAPTER 3 — The Name Hidden in Silver

That night, the house did not sleep.

But it also did not speak.

Not fully.

Not honestly.

It only whispered.

Mara stayed in the guest wing with Ivy.

A room too large for comfort.

Too perfect for rest.

Ivy slept quickly, exhausted from confusion she could not name.

The silver hummingbird lay beside her on the pillow.

Mara sat at the edge of the bed.

Her hands trembled slightly.

She replayed everything.

Camille’s voice.

Julian’s reaction.

The way he looked at Ivy—

Not like a child.

Like a question.

Down the hall, Julian stood in his study.

The hummingbird charm lay on his desk under a single lamp.

He had not touched anything else in an hour.

Just that.

His assistant spoke carefully.

“Sir… should I proceed with the termination notice for the staff request?”

Julian didn’t respond.

He was staring at the charm.

Turning it slowly.

“Leave us,” he said finally.

The assistant hesitated.

“Sir—”

“Leave.”

When the door closed, Julian exhaled slowly.

And for the first time, he allowed himself to think the thought fully.

Not avoid it.

Not suppress it.

Not bury it under business or logic or fear.

I know this.

But he didn’t know how he knew it.

That was the problem.

He picked up the charm again.

And saw something engraved deeper than the surface:

A date.

Faded.

Almost erased.

But still there.

His fingers tightened.

Because suddenly—

He remembered something else.

A hospital room.

White light.

A woman crying.

Him holding something small.

A promise he couldn’t quite hear anymore.

Julian stood abruptly.

The chair behind him scraped the floor.

“No,” he whispered.

May you like

But not in denial.

In recognition.
