CHAPTER 2: THE SCAR AND THE CONSPIRACY

The mansion had never been so quiet.

Not during charity galas.

Not during board meetings.

Not even during the funeral service that had nearly been held for Ethan Blackwood five years earlier.

Now silence hung over every hallway like a storm cloud.

Employees whispered behind closed doors.

Lawyers moved from room to room carrying stacks of documents.

Investigators photographed offices.

Auditors copied financial records.

Every minute uncovered another secret.

Every hour exposed another lie.

And at the center of it all sat Vanessa Sterling.

Alone.

Terrified.

No longer the queen of the mansion.

No longer the woman issuing orders.

No longer untouchable.

She occupied a leather chair inside the library while two security officers stood beside the door.

Her expensive makeup had started to smear.

Her perfect hairstyle had begun to collapse.

The confidence she had worn like armor was gone.

Because for the first time in years, nobody feared her.

Now she was the one who was afraid.

Very afraid.

Meanwhile, on the third floor of the mansion, Ethan sat beside Olivia's bed.

The doctor had been examining her for nearly an hour.

Ethan hated every second of waiting.

His eyes never left Olivia.

She looked so fragile sleeping beneath white blankets.

So different from the woman he remembered.

Yet somehow still the same.

The same gentle face.

The same kindness.

The same woman who had loved him before he became a billionaire.

The doctor finally stepped outside.

Ethan immediately followed.

"Tell me."

The doctor hesitated.

Then sighed.

"She'll recover."

Ethan released a breath he didn't realize he had been holding.

But the doctor's expression remained serious.

"However..."

Ethan's stomach tightened.

"However what?"

"Years of physical exhaustion."

The doctor studied his notes.

"Chronic stress."

Another page turned.

"Malnutrition."

Another.

"Sleep deprivation."

Ethan clenched his jaw.

Every word felt like a punch.

The doctor continued.

"She's been surviving, not living."

Ethan looked through the bedroom doorway.

His wife slept peacefully for the first time in years.

And he hated himself.

He knew it wasn't rational.

He knew none of this was his fault.

Yet guilt still crushed him.

Because while Olivia had been suffering here...

he had been building skyscrapers overseas.

Expanding businesses.

Winning awards.

Making billions.

Completely unaware.

The doctor hesitated.

"There is one more thing."

Ethan looked up.

"What?"

"The scar."

Instantly his attention sharpened.

"What about it?"

The doctor became serious.

"That wasn't caused by an accident."

Ethan froze.

"What do you mean?"

The doctor lowered his voice.

"It appears consistent with blunt-force trauma."

For several seconds Ethan said nothing.

Then:

"Someone hit her."

The doctor nodded.

"Most likely."

A dangerous silence followed.

The kind that made experienced businessmen nervous.

The kind that made competitors regret provoking Ethan Blackwood.

The kind that preceded destruction.

Ethan thanked the doctor.

Then returned to the bedroom.

Olivia was awake.

She was staring at the ceiling.

Lost in thought.

"Ethan."

Her voice was soft.

He sat beside her.

"How are you feeling?"

She smiled weakly.

"Like I slept for a year."

He gently brushed a strand of hair from her face.

Then his fingers paused near the scar.

Olivia immediately looked away.

There it was.

Fear.

The same fear he had seen downstairs.

The same fear she carried whenever certain topics arose.

Ethan noticed.

And he understood.

The scar mattered.

A lot.

"Olivia."

She remained silent.

"Who hurt you?"

The room became still.

For a long time she said nothing.

Then tears gathered in her eyes.

"Ethan..."

Her voice cracked.

"Please don't ask."

His heart sank.

Because only truly terrible memories created reactions like that.

He took her hand.

"I'm not asking to hurt you."

She looked down.

"I know."

"Then tell me."

A tear rolled down her cheek.

"It won't change anything."

"It changes everything."

She closed her eyes.

And finally spoke.

The memory emerged slowly.

Painfully.

Like reopening an old wound.

Three years earlier.

Late at night.

The mansion had already become Vanessa's kingdom.

Olivia had been cleaning the dining room.

A routine task.

Nothing unusual.

Then she heard voices.

Men arguing inside Ethan's private office.

That alone was strange.

The office had been locked for years.

Vanessa rarely allowed anyone inside.

Curious, Olivia approached.

The door wasn't fully closed.

Through the small opening she saw Vanessa speaking with a man.

A man Olivia had never seen before.

Tall.

Gray-haired.

Expensive suit.

Powerful.

Dangerous.

The conversation made no sense.

At first.

Then Olivia heard Ethan's name.

Everything changed.

She listened.

And discovered something horrifying.

The plane crash story had been fake.

Someone had fabricated it.

Someone had deliberately separated her from Ethan.

Someone had wanted control of Blackwood Holdings.

Before Olivia could hear more, the floor creaked beneath her foot.

The conversation stopped.

The office door opened.

The man stepped out.

Their eyes met.

Olivia knew immediately she had made a mistake.

A terrible mistake.

"He looked at me," she whispered.

Her hands began trembling.

"He knew I'd heard something."

Ethan squeezed her hand.

"What happened next?"

Olivia swallowed.

"Vanessa smiled."

The memory darkened.

"Then she told him not to worry."

Ethan waited.

Olivia's voice became smaller.

"She said nobody would believe a servant."

A chill moved through the room.

"What happened?"

Olivia touched her scar unconsciously.

"The man grabbed me."

Ethan's entire body stiffened.

"He pushed me."

She closed her eyes.

"My head hit the corner of a marble table."

Silence.

Pure silence.

The kind that comes before rage.

Blood.

Darkness.

Pain.

When Olivia woke, Vanessa was standing over her.

Smiling.

The scar had already formed.

The warning came next.

Tell anyone and you'll disappear.

Tell anyone and nobody will find your body.

Tell anyone and Ethan's company will be destroyed.

Olivia had believed them.

Because by then Vanessa controlled everything.

The banks.

The staff.

The lawyers.

The security systems.

Olivia had nowhere to turn.

Nowhere safe.

No one she trusted.

Except Ethan.

And Ethan was supposedly dead.

When the story ended, Ethan sat motionless.

His face revealed nothing.

Which frightened Olivia more than anger would have.

Because she knew him.

She knew that look.

Somewhere inside him, something had broken.

"Who was the man?"

Olivia hesitated.

"I don't know."

"Think."

"I never learned his name."

Ethan stood.

Walked to the window.

Looked out across the estate.

Then he asked one final question.

"Would you recognize him?"

Olivia immediately answered.

"Yes."

The response came without hesitation.

Without doubt.

Without uncertainty.

Yes.

Ethan nodded once.

Then left the room.

His expression terrified everyone he passed.

Downstairs, the investigation was accelerating.

Accountants had discovered millions missing.

Lawyers had uncovered forged signatures.

Bank records revealed shell companies.

Property transfers.

Fraud.

Embezzlement.

Everything pointed toward Vanessa.

But Ethan wasn't interested in money anymore.

Money could be recovered.

He wanted something else.

The truth.

Exactly one hour later, he entered the library.

Vanessa looked up.

Hope flashed across her face.

Perhaps she believed she could still negotiate.

Still manipulate.

Still escape.

She didn't know Ethan had already spoken with Olivia.

"Ethan."

Her voice trembled.

"This is all a misunderstanding."

He sat across from her.

Calmly.

Almost politely.

Which somehow felt worse.

"You have one opportunity."

Vanessa swallowed.

"To do what?"

"Tell me who he is."

Her face changed.

Just for a fraction of a second.

But Ethan saw it.

And that was enough.

"You know exactly who I'm talking about."

Vanessa looked away.

"I don't."

Ethan leaned forward.

"The man who attacked Olivia."

The color drained from her face.

Bingo.

She knew.

She absolutely knew.

For several seconds neither spoke.

Then Vanessa laughed nervously.

"I have no idea what you're talking about."

Ethan nodded.

Then opened a folder.

Inside were photographs.

Financial records.

Phone logs.

Email transcripts.

Evidence.

Lots of evidence.

Vanessa's breathing became uneven.

Ethan placed another photograph on the table.

Then another.

Then another.

Her hands started shaking.

Because every secret she'd hidden for years was now exposed.

Every transaction.

Every meeting.

Every lie.

"You committed fraud."

Silence.

"You forged documents."

Silence.

"You stole company assets."

Silence.

"You imprisoned my wife inside her own home."

Silence.

Then Ethan delivered the final blow.

"And you helped cover up an assault."

Vanessa's composure shattered.

"Stop!"

The scream echoed through the library.

Security immediately moved closer.

Vanessa burst into tears.

Real tears this time.

Not the fake tears she used to manipulate others.

The tears of a person watching her world collapse.

"You don't understand."

Ethan's eyes hardened.

"Then explain."

She looked at him.

Fear filled every inch of her face.

Because the truth was worse than prison.

Much worse.

Finally she whispered:

"It wasn't my idea."

The room froze.

Ethan stared.

"Whose idea was it?"

Vanessa closed her eyes.

And spoke a name.

A name Ethan never expected.

A name that hit him harder than any business betrayal ever could.

"Alden Blackwood."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Ethan slowly stood.

"No."

Vanessa nodded weakly.

"Yes."

Ethan felt the floor shift beneath him.

Because Alden Blackwood wasn't a stranger.

He wasn't a competitor.

He wasn't an enemy.

Alden Blackwood was family.

His uncle.

The man who had helped raise him.

The man who attended his wedding.

The man who had stood beside him for decades.

The man Ethan trusted.

Or thought he trusted.

Vanessa's voice shook.

"Alden wanted control."

Ethan couldn't speak.

The words barely seemed real.

Vanessa continued.

"When your plane disappeared from radar during that storm..."

Her eyes lowered.

"...he saw an opportunity."

The aircraft had never crashed.

It had simply lost communication for several days during an emergency landing overseas.

By the time contact resumed, Alden had already begun spreading rumors.

The fake reports.

The false witnesses.

The lies.

Everything started with him.

Vanessa had merely become his tool.

His accomplice.

His puppet.

And Olivia had been the obstacle.

The wife who legally controlled a massive portion of Ethan's holdings.

The woman who refused to leave.

The woman who continued believing Ethan would return.

Alden needed her powerless.

So he broke her.

Little by little.

Year after year.

Ethan's hands curled into fists.

The betrayal felt unbearable.

Yet Vanessa wasn't finished.

"There is more."

His eyes snapped toward her.

More?

How could there possibly be more?

Vanessa's next words answered that question.

"The night Olivia overheard us..."

She swallowed.

"Alden was there."

Ethan froze.

The library became silent again.

Vanessa looked terrified.

Because she knew what came next.

"He was the man who pushed her."

The world stopped.

For several seconds Ethan couldn't hear anything.

Couldn't feel anything.

Couldn't think.

Only one sentence repeated in his head.

He was the man who pushed her.

His own uncle.

His own blood.

The person Olivia had trusted.

The person she welcomed into their home.

The person who attended family holidays.

The person who smiled at her wedding.

That man.

That man had nearly killed her.

And now Ethan knew.

Finally knew.

Exactly who had destroyed their lives.

Vanessa lowered her head.

Tears fell onto the table.

"It's over."

Ethan stared at her.

"No."

His voice was terrifyingly calm.

"This isn't over."

Because at that very moment, hundreds of miles away, Alden Blackwood was boarding a private jet.

Completely unaware that the truth had surfaced.

Completely unaware that Vanessa had confessed.

Completely unaware that Ethan knew everything.

But he would know soon.

Very soon.

Because Ethan Blackwood was no longer searching for answers.

Now he was coming for the man responsible.

And when he arrived...

nothing would stop him.

Not money.

Not power.

Not family ties.

May you like

Nothing.

The final reckoning had begun.
