CHAPTER 4 — The Man Who Could Not Let Go of the Truth

Maxwell did not sleep that night.
He sat in his office overlooking Boston.
City lights blurred against the glass.
Lily’s voice replayed in his head.
I don’t need the medicine.
His jaw tightened.
A child that age should never understand sacrifice.
He opened his laptop.
Called his private investigator.
“I need everything,” he said.
“Eleanor Bennett. Three-year gap. No assumptions. Only facts.”
The voice on the other end hesitated.
“Sir… that name was cleared after divorce proceedings. There was no suspicious activity.”
Maxwell’s grip tightened slightly.
“Search again.”
Silence.
Then:
“Yes, sir.”
He leaned back.
His reflection stared at him in the glass.
Cold.
Controlled.
Unstable.
Because something had already shifted.
Three years ago, Eleanor left cleanly.
No fights.
No scandals.
No explanation he could accept.
Just disappearance.
Now she reappeared with a child who looked like him.
And a story that didn’t add up.
His phone buzzed.
A message from his investigator:
“She gave birth two years after divorce. No listed father. Hospital record sealed under private medical sponsorship.”
Maxwell froze.
Two years after divorce.
Meaning—
the child existed after he was already gone.
But not emotionally.
Biologically.
His hand tightened around the phone.

“Find the hospital,” he said immediately.
“And the doctor.”
