CHAPTER 1 — The Woman Who Disappeared

Daniel Hartwell could negotiate billion-dollar acquisitions without breaking a sweat.

He could stand in front of hostile investors, dismantle competitors, and make decisions that affected thousands of employees.

But standing on that Chicago sidewalk, staring at the woman he once loved, he felt more helpless than he had in his entire life.

"Emma?"

The name left his lips like a prayer.

A memory.

A wound.

Emma's fingers tightened around the edge of her cardboard sign.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Traffic continued behind them.

People walked past.

The city kept breathing.

Yet Daniel felt as though the world had stopped.

Because Emma wasn't supposed to be here.

Five years ago, she had vanished.

One day she had been planning their future.

The next day she was gone.

No goodbye.

No explanation.

Nothing.

Daniel had searched for months.

Private investigators.

Friends.

Former coworkers.

Hospitals.

Airports.

Every lead ended the same way.

Nowhere.

As if she had disappeared from the earth.

And now she was sitting on a freezing sidewalk wearing a threadbare coat while three little boys huddled beside her.

Three boys who looked exactly like him.

His stomach twisted.

The oldest child couldn't have been younger than four.

Maybe five.

Daniel's mind raced through impossible mathematics.

Dates.

Months.

Years.

Every calculation pointed toward the same horrifying conclusion.

The children had been conceived before Emma disappeared.

Which meant...

His knees nearly buckled.

They were his.

Every instinct in his body screamed it.

The oldest boy's jawline.

The middle child's eyes.

The youngest one's stubborn expression.

Tiny reflections of himself.

Five years.

Five years stolen.

Five years he could never get back.

"Daddy?"

The youngest boy looked up at the oldest.

"Why's Mommy crying?"

Daniel hadn't even realized Emma was crying.

Tears streamed silently down her face.

Not dramatic.

Not loud.

Just endless.

As though they had been waiting years for permission to fall.

The oldest child immediately wrapped an arm around his younger brother.

Protective.

Careful.

Far too mature for his age.

That alone broke Daniel's heart.

Children shouldn't have to learn survival before childhood.

"Emma," Daniel whispered.

"What happened?"

Her lips trembled.

She looked away.

"Please go."

The words struck harder than any insult.

Daniel stared.

"What?"

"You need to leave."

"Leave?"

His voice cracked.

"You disappear for five years."

He pointed toward the boys.

"I find three children who look exactly like me."

His chest rose sharply.

"And you want me to leave?"

The oldest boy stepped slightly in front of his brothers.

Instinctively.

Protectively.

Daniel noticed.

And hated himself for being jealous of a child.

Because that should have been him.

He should have been protecting them.

Teaching them.

Raising them.

Instead he was a stranger.

Emma lowered her eyes.

"They don't know you."

The sentence felt like a knife.

Daniel swallowed.

"Then tell them."

Silence.

The boys looked between them.

Confused.

Nervous.

The youngest clutched Emma's sleeve.

"Mama?"

Emma closed her eyes.

Daniel noticed how thin she had become.

How tired.

How fragile.

This wasn't the woman he remembered.

The Emma he loved had laughed with her whole body.

This Emma looked exhausted.

Broken.

Scared.

As if every day had become a battle.

A black SUV suddenly stopped beside Daniel's sedan.

Security.

Two men emerged immediately.

"Mr. Hartwell?"

Daniel never looked away from Emma.

"Leave."

"Sir—"

"Now."

The guards exchanged glances before stepping back.

Because for the first time in years, Daniel Hartwell wasn't thinking like a billionaire.

He was thinking like a man who had just discovered his children.

And nothing else mattered.

A cold wind swept across the street.

The youngest boy shivered.

Daniel instantly removed his cashmere coat.

He crouched slowly.

Carefully.

Making sure not to scare them.

Then he held it out.

The oldest child hesitated.

Emma froze.

Daniel simply said:

"He's cold."

The boy stared.

The coat probably cost more than everything they owned.

Yet Daniel didn't care.

The child slowly accepted it.

The youngest wrapped himself inside immediately.

Tiny fingers gripping the expensive fabric.

Daniel's heart shattered.

No child should look grateful for warmth.

No child.

Not his child.

Not any child.

The oldest finally spoke.

"Are you rich?"

Daniel blinked.

The question was so unexpected that he almost laughed.

Almost.

"Yes."

The boy nodded.

Like that confirmed something.

Then he looked at Emma.

"He's the man from the picture."

Daniel froze.

Picture?

Emma's face turned white.

The oldest boy immediately realized he'd said something wrong.

Too late.

Daniel's pulse thundered.

"What picture?"

No answer.

"What picture, Emma?"

Her breathing accelerated.

The boys looked frightened now.

The oldest hugged his brothers closer.

Daniel softened his voice instantly.

"I'm sorry."

The children relaxed slightly.

Then he looked back at Emma.

"What picture?"

A long silence followed.

Finally...

Emma whispered:

"Their baby picture."

Daniel stopped breathing.

The world tilted.

Baby picture.

Their baby picture.

Which meant she had told them.

At least part of the truth.

The oldest child stared at him.

"You really know Mommy?"

Daniel's eyes filled unexpectedly.

"Yeah."

His voice cracked.

"I really do."

The boy studied him carefully.

Like he was solving a puzzle.

Then asked:

"Did you leave us?"

The question destroyed him.

Completely.

Daniel looked at Emma.

Then back at the boy.

"No."

The answer came immediately.

Firm.

Certain.

"I didn't know you existed."

The children exchanged confused looks.

Emma lowered her head.

And for the first time...

Daniel realized something.

This wasn't a woman hiding a secret.

This was a woman carrying one.

A secret heavy enough to destroy her life.

And someone had put it there.

Because Emma wasn't guilty.

She was terrified.

And suddenly Daniel knew.

Someone else was responsible.

Someone had separated them.

Someone had lied.

Someone had stolen five years.

And before the night ended...

May you like

Daniel intended to find out who.
