CHAPTER 3 – THE THING BURIED UNDER MERCER HOLDINGS

The storm outside Mercer Estate did not stop.

It only changed direction.

Wind pressed against the windows like something trying to get in, while inside the study, silence had become heavier than sound.

Julian Mercer stood still, staring at the blinking red dot on Lily’s second phone.

Not because he didn’t understand what it was.

But because he understood it too well.

A tracking system like that wasn’t civilian.

It wasn’t even corporate-grade.

It was something built by people who did not trust time, law, or distance.

Evelyn broke the silence first.

“Six hours,” she repeated. “They said six hours.”

Julian didn’t respond.

His mind had already left the room.

He walked to a wall behind his desk and pressed his palm against a narrow panel.

A seam appeared.

Then a hidden cabinet slid open.

Evelyn frowned.

“I’ve lived here twelve years,” she said slowly. “I didn’t know that existed.”

Julian didn’t look at her.

“That was the point.”

Inside the cabinet was a secure terminal.

Old.

Not connected to the public Mercer Holdings network.

A system he had sworn never to use again.

Not since—

He stopped that thought before it fully formed.

Lily stood near the door, arms wrapped around herself.

“I should leave,” she whispered.

Evelyn turned to her immediately.

“No.”

Julian finally spoke.

“You already did leave,” he said. “Someone redirected you here.”

Lily shook her head quickly.

“I didn’t choose this.”

“I know,” Julian said.

That made her stop.

Because it wasn’t suspicion in his voice anymore.

It was certainty.

And that was more dangerous.

Julian typed a command into the terminal.

A warning flashed.

ACCESSING ARCHIVED MERCER HOLDINGS FILES – LEVEL BLACK

Evelyn stepped closer.

“What are you looking for?”

Julian hesitated.

Then answered:

“Something I buried.”

The system unlocked.

A folder appeared.

Unlabeled.

Just a date.

Julian stared at it.

His jaw tightened slightly.

Then he opened it.

The screen filled with documents.

Not financial reports.

Not medical records.

Not acquisitions.

But surveillance transcripts.

Audio logs.

Internal Mercer Holdings communications marked HIGH CONFIDENTIAL – BOARD EYES ONLY

Evelyn leaned closer without meaning to.

“What is this?” she whispered.

Julian didn’t answer.

He was already reading.

A transcript appeared:

SUBJECT: Project HOLLOW GATE
STATUS: ACTIVE CONTAINMENT
OBJECTIVE: CONTROL OF UNAUTHORIZED MEDICAL DATA TRANSFER NETWORKS

Evelyn frowned.

“That sounds like—”

“Healthcare,” Julian finished quietly.

He scrolled.

Another file opened.

INCIDENT REPORT – MERCER HOLDINGS DIVERSION EVENT
DATE: 10 YEARS, 4 MONTHS AGO

Julian’s eyes narrowed slightly.

He remembered that night.

A breach.

A leak.

A scandal that never fully surfaced in the press.

At the time, he had called it cyber theft.

A rogue internal contractor.

A cleanup job.

But the next line made his chest tighten.

MISSING ASSET: “LULLABY PROTOCOL KEY NODE”

Evelyn blinked.

“Lullaby…?”

Julian didn’t respond.

His fingers moved faster.

Another file opened.

This one contained a list of names.

Dozens of them.

Patients.

Children.

Medical case IDs.

Evelyn covered her mouth slightly.

“Oh my God…”

But Julian wasn’t looking at the list.

He was looking at the metadata.

At the signature stamp attached to each file.

And the name on it.

Not his.

Not his company’s.

But someone inside Mercer Holdings.

Someone who had full override authority.

Someone who had never been publicly identified.

A name appeared at the bottom of the log.

E. HART

Evelyn frowned.

“That’s Lily’s last name.”

Julian’s expression didn’t change.

But something in his eyes hardened.

“No,” he said slowly.

“That’s her mother’s file signature.”

Lily took a step forward.

“My mom worked in healthcare,” she said quietly. “Data systems. She never talked about Mercer Holdings.”

Julian looked at her now.

Really looked at her.

Not as a guest.

Not as a liability.

But as something tied directly to a decade-old breach inside his empire.

“What was your mother’s name?” he asked.

Lily hesitated.

“Sarah Hart.”

Julian typed it in.

The system responded instantly.

MATCH FOUND – SARAH HART
ROLE: INTERNAL DATA ARCHITECT – MERCER MEDICAL DIVISION (TERMINATED)
CAUSE: INTERNAL SECURITY BREACH INVESTIGATION

Evelyn stepped back.

“Terminated?” she whispered. “As in… fired?”

Julian didn’t answer immediately.

Because he was reading further.

And what he saw made the temperature in the room feel like it dropped.

NOTE: SUBJECT HART DISCOVERED UNAUTHORIZED REDIRECTION OF PATIENT SURVIVAL DATA TO EXTERNAL NETWORK (“LULLABY ROUTE”)
ACTION TAKEN: CONTAINMENT INITIATED
FOLLOW-UP: SUBJECT DECLARED DECEASED (UNVERIFIED)

Lily froze.

“My mom died in a car accident,” she said quickly. “That’s what they told me.”

Julian didn’t look away from the screen.

“There was no accident report in Mercer-linked archives,” he said quietly.

Evelyn turned to him sharply.

“What are you saying?”

Julian finally leaned back.

“I’m saying your mother didn’t just work inside my company.”

A pause.

“She helped build the system that someone is now killing people to control.”

Silence.

Heavy.

Unstable.

Lily’s voice broke.

“So why am I being followed?”

Julian looked at her.

And for the first time, his answer carried weight he did not like.

“Because you may be the last remaining access point to what she hid.”

The tracker on the second phone suddenly beeped.

All three of them looked at it.

The red dot had moved.

Closer.

Evelyn whispered:

“They’re coming.”

Julian shut the terminal instantly.

“No,” he said.

“They’re already inside the perimeter.”

A second later, the estate security system flashed red.

UNAUTHORIZED ENTRY – WEST GATE BREACH

Evelyn grabbed Lily’s arm instinctively.

Julian moved to the desk drawer.

Opened it.

Pulled out something neither of them expected.

A sealed black drive.

Lily stared at it.

“What is that?”

Julian’s voice was low.

“The thing your mother stole from Mercer Holdings.”

A pause.

“And the thing they’ve been hunting her for ever since.”

A loud impact echoed from the lower floor.

Not thunder.

Not wind.

A door.

Forced open.

Evelyn flinched.

Lily’s breathing quickened.

Julian remained still.

But his next words changed everything.

“If they get that drive,” he said quietly, “they don’t just erase evidence.”

He looked at Lily.

“They erase you too.”

Another impact.

Closer.

Evelyn turned toward the hallway.

“Julian—”

He cut her off.

“No exits through the front. They’ll already have sightlines.”

He looked at Lily.

“Do you trust me?”

She hesitated.

Then nodded.

Barely.

Julian placed the drive into her hands.

“Then run when I tell you.”

Evelyn’s eyes widened.

“You’re not coming?”

Julian’s expression didn’t soften.

“I am the one they expected to find.”

A pause.

“They didn’t expect her.”

The sound of footsteps echoed upstairs.

Multiple.

Coordinated.

Professional.

Evelyn whispered:

“Who are they?”

Julian looked at the hallway.

And said the first honest answer of the night.

“The people who decided ten years ago that some truths should stay buried.”

The lights flickered.

The house went quiet.

Then—

A voice came through the intercom.

Calm.

Controlled.

Familiar in the worst way.

“Julian Mercer. We know you have the asset.”

Julian didn’t move.

The voice continued:

“Hand her over. And this ends cleanly.”

A pause.

Then:

“Refuse… and we open every door in your life.”

Lily tightened her grip on the drive.

Evelyn stepped in front of her instinctively.

Julian looked at both of them.

And for the first time in years, the billionaire who owned half a city made a decision that had nothing to do with business.

He walked to the intercom.

Pressed the button.

And said:

“No.”

A beat.

Then added:

“She stays.”

Silence on the other end.

Then the voice replied softly:

“Then you’ve chosen to remember.”

The intercom cut out.

And somewhere inside Mercer Estate—

locks began to disengage.

One by one.

Evelyn whispered:

“What does that mean?”

Julian looked at Lily.

“It means,” he said quietly,

“they just stopped hiding.”

And as the first door upstairs slammed open…

Lily Hart realized something terrible:

May you like

She hadn’t been brought here for safety.

She had been brought here to open the thing everyone else was too afraid to touch.
