Chapter 2 - The Fallout in Ivory and Silk

The grand ballroom had descended into a state of polite anarchy. Four hundred members of California’s high society stood in clusters, their whispers rising like the hum of a disturbed hornet’s nest. Champagne flutes clicked against diamonds; public relations executives huddled near the entrance, frantically checking their phones.

At the altar, Vanessa Whitman had not moved. Her mother, Eleanor Whitman, had rushed down the aisle, her silk dress rustling as she grabbed her daughter’s arm.

“Vanessa, what is the meaning of this?” Eleanor hissed, her voice low so the nearby guests couldn't hear. “Who was that child? Why did Caleb leave with her?”

Vanessa did not look at her mother. Her eyes were fixed on the double doors where Caleb had disappeared. Her French manicure was digging so deeply into her white rose bouquet that the thorns were drawing tiny drops of blood from her thumb, staining the pristine silk of her dress.

“A mistake,” Vanessa said, her voice devoid of emotion. “A pathetic little girl belonging to the hotel staff. She must have gotten lost.”

“Lost? She accused you of assault in front of the Governor!” Eleanor gasped, her face turning pale beneath her heavy makeup. “Vanessa, if there is any truth to what that child said—”

“There is no truth,” Vanessa snapped, finally turning to face her mother. Her blue eyes were wide, cold, and entirely focused. “The woman was incompetent. She mismanaged the jewelry delivery and insulted me. I simply corrected her. If she fell, it was because she is clumsy.”

The double doors opened again.

It wasn't Caleb who returned. It was Marcus Vance, flanked by two large men in dark grey suits—Caleb’s personal security detail. Marcus walked down the long white carpeted aisle with a steady, unhurried stride. He stopped at the base of the altar, looking up at Vanessa.

“Ms. Whitman,” Marcus said, his voice loud enough to carry to the first five rows of guests. “The wedding has been canceled. Mr. Foster has left the premises.”

A collective gasp rippled through the ballroom.

Eleanor Whitman stepped forward, her chest heaving. “Canceled? On the word of a servant’s child? This is outrageous! The Whitman family will not be humiliated like this. Where is Caleb?”

“Mr. Foster is currently at the hospital ensuring that Nadia Carter is receiving proper medical attention for the concussion your daughter caused,” Marcus said, his gaze remaining fixed on Vanessa. “He has also instructed me to inform you that all joint venture agreements between Foster Renewable Energy and Whitman Holdings are suspended effective immediately.”

Vanessa’s face finally cracked. The polished stillness vanished, replaced by a sudden, ugly rage. She stepped down from the altar, her heavy dress trailing behind her. “He can’t do that! The contracts are signed! We are four minutes away from a legal union!”

“Four minutes too late, Vanessa,” Marcus said quietly. “Your security guards are currently being questioned by the hotel’s management regarding the destruction of the surveillance logs. Fortunately for us, Caleb owns twenty percent of this hotel chain. The backup servers are located offsite. We already have the footage.”

Vanessa took a step back, her face turning the color of her ivory gown. She looked around the ballroom, suddenly realizing that the four hundred guests weren't looking at her with admiration anymore. They were looking at her as though she were a virus.
