Chapter 7 - The Unmasking

Friday morning arrived with the cold, sterile light of a true Chicago winter. The executive boardroom of Mitchell Tech Solutions was packed with board members, institutional investors, and legal representatives. At the head of the table sat David Vance and Catherine Mitchell, their faces smug with the anticipation of a complete coup.
"The meeting of the board of directors is now in session," David announced, tapping his gold pen against the glass table. "The primary item on the agenda is the immediate removal of James Mitchell as Chief Executive Officer due to prolonged absence, neglect of fiduciary duties, and unauthorized interference with approved corporate assets."
"You don't need a vote, David," a cold, powerful voice said from the back entrance.
The double doors swung open, and James Mitchell walked into the room.
He wasn't wearing the flannel shirt or the worn work boots. He wore a bespoke, five-thousand-dollar charcoal suit, a crisp white shirt with custom silver cufflinks, and a luxury watch that caught the sunlight like a blade. His hair was perfectly styled, his face carved from marble, his gray eyes flashing with an ancient, predatory intelligence that made half the board members immediately lean back in their chairs.
Beside him walked Emily Vance and Lily Grace.
Emily looked beautiful but terrified, wearing a simple, conservative dress James had arranged for her, her fingers gripping Lily’s hand tightly. Lily looked around the massive glass room with wide, curious eyes, still holding her small plastic triceratops.
"James?" Catherine gasped, her immaculate social mask cracking as she stood up. "What is the meaning of this? Who are these people?"
"This is Emily Vance and her daughter, Lily," James said, taking his seat at the head of the table, commanding the room effortlessly. "They are the residents of 4122 West Hawthorne Street—the property your subsidiary, Apex Development, attempted to arson last night to clear out a forty-year lease before a federal injunction could be filed."
David Vance went completely white, his hands trembling as he tried to gather his papers. "James, this is absurd! You’re bringing street people into an executive boardroom to level wild accusations? You’ve completely lost your mind!"
"I have the confession from the two men your security chief paid five thousand dollars to burn the diner, David," James said, sliding a digital tablet across the glass table. On the screen was a recorded video of the thug from the kitchen, detailing the entire operation under the questioning of the Chicago Police Department. "The police executed a search warrant on your private office three hours ago. They found the secondary ledger for Apex Development Group, detailing your offshore embezzlement scheme that cost this firm twelve million dollars over the last fiscal year."
A collective murmur of shock exploded through the board members. Several institutional investors stood up, demanding to see the files.
"You're done, David," James said quietly. "The federal marshals are waiting downstairs in the lobby to arrest you for corporate fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit arson."
David stared at the tablet, his face twisting into a mask of pure, unadulterated venom. He looked from James to Emily, then back to James. "You went undercover? You lived in that garbage neighborhood like a rat just to catch me?"
"No," James said, his voice dropping into a register of profound, beautiful clarity. "I went there because I was empty. And they gave me the only thing your fortune could never buy—a family."
Two uniform police officers entered the boardroom, grabbing David by the arms and dragging him out of the room in chains. Catherine Mitchell sat back down, her face pale as she realized her twelve percent stock value had just been completely subordinated to James’s absolute control.
James stood up from his leather chair, turning his back on the board of directors, the billions of dollars, and the glass towers of Wacker Drive. He walked over to Emily, who was staring at him with wide, shocked eyes, the realization of who he truly was finally washing over her.
"James..." Emily whispered, her voice cracking with a deep, agonizing sense of betrayal. "You’re James Mitchell. The billionaire. The tech tycoon. The man who owned the company that tried to destroy my life."
"I am," James said, his eyes filled with a profound humility. "But the man who sat in your booth, the man who loves your daughter, and the man who wants to spend the rest of his life protecting you... that man is real, Emily. I never lied about how I felt about you."

Emily looked down at the luxury suit, the expensive watch, the massive boardroom, and felt a wall rise between them. "You played a game with us, James. You pretended to be one of us while you held the keys to the entire city. I can't... I don't know who you are."
She turned and walked out of the executive suite, pulling Lily along with her, leaving the billionaire standing alone in his tower of glass and gold.
