Chapter 6 - The Trap is Sprung

Plot: Evelyn discovers James’s betrayal and attempts a hostile takeover of his CEO position using board alliances. She leaks a fake scandal to the media to blacken Nora’s name. James, anticipated her move, counterstrikes during an emergency board meeting, exposing Evelyn's financial crimes and stripping her of power.

The headline on the cover of the New York Post’s digital edition at 6:00 AM on Thursday morning was brutal:

"WHITFIELD CAPITAL IP STOLEN? FORMER WIFE ACCUSED OF SCHEMING WITH UNAPPROVED RESEARCH LAB"

The article was a masterpiece of legal slander. It didn't mention the triplets—Evelyn was still smarting from the legal risks of that angle—but it framed Nora as a disgraced former spouse who was using unauthorized access to Whitfield patents to secure university funding under false pretenses.

Nora’s phone started ringing at 6:15 AM. Reporters were already standing outside her Brooklyn brownstone.

Inside Whitfield Tower, an emergency board meeting had been called for 9:00 AM.

Evelyn Whitfield walked into the boardroom carrying a pristine leather folder. She was surrounded by six senior board members whom she had spent fifteen years cultivating through private equity favors.

James was already sitting at the head of the table. He was wearing his dark suit, calm, relaxed, sipping black coffee.

"James," Evelyn said smoothly as she took her seat. "I see you've read the news. I told you that girl was a threat to this company. The board has convened to discuss your recent unauthorized assignment of the marine patents to her university lab."

The board members murmured in agreement. Lord Sterling, a heavy-set British investor who owned eight percent of the voting shares, cleared his throat loudly.

"James, old chap," Sterling said, looking uncomfortable. "Transferring four hundred million dollars worth of proprietary IP to your ex-wife's university without full board approval... it's a breach of fiduciary duty. Evelyn has proposed a motion to suspend your executive powers pending a forensic audit."

Evelyn smiled softly into her teacup. She had him. With Arthur Vance managing the legal paperwork and Sterling backing her, she had the eight votes required to strip James of his CEO title and place the company under a management committee—effectively reinstating her absolute control.

James set his coffee cup down. He didn't look angry. He looked almost bored.

"Are you finished, Mother?" James asked softly.

Evelyn's smile faltered slightly. "James, don't make this embarrassing. Hand over your keycard and step aside while we manage the press fallout."

James reached into his coat, pulled out a thumb drive, and tossed it onto the center of the glass table.

"Marcus," James said toward the intercom system. "Run the presentation."

The high-definition monitors lining the boardroom walls flickered to life.

Instead of patent documents, the screens displayed a series of offshore bank statements from Grand Cayman, Swiss asset transfers, and internal emails dating back six years.

Evelyn’s face turned from ivory to ash in a fraction of a second.

"What is this?" Lord Sterling demanded, leaning forward to read the screen. "Is that... is that my private holding account?"

"That, Lord Sterling," James said, leaning back in his chair, "is a record of eighteen million dollars in illegal kickbacks paid to you by my mother through shell companies in Panama, in exchange for your voting alliance on board decisions."

Sterling gasped, turning red. "That's... that's a lie!"

"It's backed by certified banking records obtained by the Federal Bureau of Investigation," James said calmly. He tapped a finger on the table. "As of eight o'clock this morning, the Southern District of New York has executed search warrants on Arthur Vance's office and my mother's private estate in East Hampton."

The room erupted into total chaos. Board members jumped to their feet, shouting, arguing, reaching for their phones.

"Quiet!" Evelyn shouted, standing up, her hands slamming against the table. Her immaculate facade completely cracked, revealing the desperate, vicious predator beneath. "This is a bluff! You can't destroy this board without destroying yourself, James! You are the CEO! You signed those filings!"

"I signed the corporate filings, Mother," James said, standing up to his full height, towering over her. "But I didn't sign the offshore wire transfers. You used Arthur Vance’s power of attorney to forge my secondary signature on every illegal transaction."

He pulled a document from his folder and slid it toward her.

"That is an official indictment notification from the Department of Justice," James said, his voice dropping into an absolute, icy whisper. "You are being charged with wire fraud, tax evasion, corporate embezzlement, and witness intimidation."

Evelyn stared at the paper. Her hands began to shake violently. "You... you brought the federal government into our family company?"

"You threatened my sons, Evelyn," James said, using her first name for the first time in his life. "You threatened the woman I love. You used this company as a weapon to terrorize my family. So I burned the weapon down."

Two uniformed federal agents, accompanied by Marcus Vance and two NYPD officers, pushed open the double doors of the boardroom.

"Evelyn Whitfield?" the lead federal agent asked, holding up a badge. "You are under arrest for federal financial crimes. You have the right to remain silent..."

The board members backed away from her as if she were contagious.

Evelyn turned to James, her eyes wide with shock, betrayal, and a sudden, terrifying realization that her reign was over.

"James... please," she whispered, her voice cracking. "I am your mother."

James looked at her. There was no hatred in his eyes. Only a deep, cold pity.

May you like

"You were never a mother, Evelyn," James said softly. "You were just an owner. And I am no longer your property."

He turned his back on her as the agents placed the silver handcuffs around her wrists and led her out of the boardroom in full view of two hundred employees waiting in the lobby below.
