Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Showdown

The corporate headquarters of Hawthorne AeroSystems was a hive of intense activity on Friday morning.
The thirty-story glass tower in downtown Denver was surrounded by news vans, military transport vehicles, and security guards in crisp black uniforms. The annual shareholder meeting was the most highly anticipated event of the year, with rumors circulating that the company was finally ready to unveil the long-awaited Aegis Protocol.
Inside the grand, wood-paneled boardroom on the top floor, twenty board members, military generals, and major investors sat around a massive, oval mahogany table.
At the head of the table stood Julian Vance, looking confident and powerful in a dark charcoal suit. A large digital screen behind him displayed the schematics of the Aegis guidance system.
"Gentlemen," Julian said, his voice carrying the smooth, practiced authority of a master manipulator. "After eight years of rigorous development and reverse-engineering, I am proud to announce that Hawthorne AeroSystems has successfully bypassed the encryption blocks left by our late founder, Nathan Hawthorne. Today, we will officially launch the Aegis Protocol, securing our position as the primary defense contractor for the United States military."
The room erupted into polite applause.
"And how, exactly, did you bypass those blocks, Julian?"
The voice was clear, cold, and resonated through the quiet room like a bell.
Julian froze. His smile stiffened, then slowly faded as the double doors of the boardroom swung open.
Ava Hawthorne walked into the room.
She wore a striking white crepe suit, her dark hair pulled back in a sleek, professional bun. Her posture was regal, her eyes flashing with a lethal, icy brilliance.
Beside her walked Daniel Mercer, looking sharp and dignified in a new, dark gray suit Ava had provided, carrying a thick leather portfolio. Behind them stood Marcus and four armed security officers, their presence immediately shifting the balance of power in the room.
"Ava," Julian said, his voice recovering its smooth tone, though a faint bead of sweat appeared near his temple. "This is a private shareholder meeting. You are no longer on the active executive board—"
"I own forty-eight percent of the voting shares of this company, Julian," Ava said, walking straight to the empty chair at the opposite end of the table. "And I am the majority owner of the Hawthorne Tomorrow Fund. I have every right to be here. Especially when you are presenting a forged software key to the United States military."
The board members began to whisper frantically among themselves. A three-star general at the center of the table frowned, looking between Ava and Julian.
"Mrs. Hawthorne, what is the meaning of this?" General Bradley demanded.
"The meaning is simple, General," Ava said, gesturing to Daniel.
Daniel stepped forward, opening the leather portfolio and distributing copies of the clinic intake files, the wire transfer records, and the Castle Rock property deeds to each board member and the military representatives.
"For the past eight years, Julian Vance has been embezzling corporate funds to keep my husband, Nathan Hawthorne, in a medically induced coma at a private, unauthorized medical estate in Castle Rock," Ava announced, her voice steady and clear. "He did not die in that avalanche. He was kidnapped, drugged, and kept hidden so that Julian could attempt to steal his intellectual property."
"This is absurd!" Julian shouted, his face turning a deep, angry red. "These documents are obvious forgeries! This man beside her is a nobody—a low-rent carpenter she hired to help her manufacture this ridiculous story!"
"These are not forgeries, Julian," Daniel said, his voice calm and carrying a powerful, resonant weight. "The routing numbers on these wire transfers connect directly to your private accounts in the Caymans. The federal authorities have already frozen those assets. And the physical key you claim to have reverse-engineered... is currently right here."
Ava reached into her pocket, pulling out the silver compass.
She pressed the North and South markers, twisted the ring, and the back popped open, revealing the gold-plated micro-circuit board.
"This is the only master key for the Aegis Protocol," Ava said, holding it up for the entire room to see. "The software you have on that screen is a dummy, Julian. If you try to run it without this key, it will permanently delete the source codes from the secure mainframe. You didn't bypass anything. You were going to sell a broken system to our military to cover up your own theft."
General Bradley stood up, his face dark with fury. He looked at the documents, then at the silver compass, and finally at Julian Vance.
"Vance," the General growled. "Explain this."
Julian looked around the room. He saw the cold, disgusted faces of the board members. He saw the security guards moving to block the exits. He saw Ava's triumphant, unyielding eyes.
He knew he was finished.
With a sudden, desperate snarl, Julian reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out a small, silver pistol.
Before he could aim it at Ava, Daniel lunged across the mahogany table.
He tackled Julian, the two men crashing onto the heavy table, scattering glasses and papers in all directions. A deafening gunshot echoed through the boardroom, shattering one of the massive glass windows.
But Daniel’s grip was unbreakable. He twisted Julian’s wrist until the pistol clattered to the floor, then pinned the older man’s arms behind his back.
Marcus and the security officers immediately converged on them, pulling Julian to his feet and slamming him against the wall, their handcuffs clicking tightly around his wrists.
The room fell into a stunned, breathless silence.
Ava ran to Daniel's side, her hands checking his shoulders, her eyes filled with terror. "Daniel! Are you hurt?"
"I’m okay," Daniel gasped, smoothing his suit jacket. He offered her a warm, reassuring smile. "I’m okay, Ava."

She looked down at Julian, who was being led out of the room by federal marshals who had just entered the building.
"It’s over, Julian," Ava said quietly.
