Chapter 7 - The Symphony of Violence

The five minutes passed in a blur of desperate calculation. Lydia stood in the center of the vault, her hands clenching the fabric of her skirt, her ears strained to catch every sound from the console. She could feel the tension radiating off Cassian—a tangible, vibrating energy that felt like a lightning storm hovering inches above her head.
"We can't let him destroy it," she whispered, her voice cracking. "It’s not just a musical instrument, Cassian. It’s my father's heart. It’s the only thing I have left that remembers his voice."
"He won't destroy it," Cassian said. He stepped behind her, his large hands resting on her shoulders, his grip steadying her trembling frame. "Because we are going up there. Matteo, prepare the flash-bangs and the heavy breaching charges. We use the service elevator shaft... the old freight lift that bypasses the main residential hallways."
"Boss, that elevator has been decommissioned since the sixties," Matteo warned. "The cables are rusted, the motor is loud as a freight train. They’ll hear us coming from three floors away."
"Then we make enough noise to ensure they don't care about the lift," Cassian snarled, pulling a heavy assault rifle from the wall weapon rack and checking the magazine with a sharp, mechanical slap. "Lydia, you stay behind Matteo. The moment the doors open, you drop to the floor and stay down until I tell you it’s clear. Do you understand me?"
"I'm coming with you," she said, her voice filled with a sudden, unshakeable strength. "I know the frequency, Cassian. Even if you get the cello back, you can't tune it without my ears. You need me to hear the blemish."
Cassian looked at her for a long, silent moment. Her hazel eyes were wide, unseeing, but filled with a fire that belonged to a warrior, not a victim. A slow, dangerous smile crept across his bloody face.
"Thomas Hayes raised a lion," he murmured, his thumb brushing against her jawline one last time. "Let's go get your father’s legacy."
The ascent through the old freight elevator shaft was a mechanical nightmare of groaning iron and screeching metal. Lydia clung to Cassian’s armored vest, the vibration of the lift shaking her teeth, the smell of old grease and rust filling her throat.
When the lift finally ground to a halt on the forty-second floor, the sound of voices could be heard through the heavy steel door—Vincent’s men, laughing and shouting as they ransacked the penthouse’s luxury kitchen.
"On my mark," Cassian whispered.
Matteo slammed a heavy breaching charge against the center of the elevator door. Three... Two... One...
BOOM!
The explosion tore the steel doors off their tracks, sending a massive wave of heat and white smoke into the penthouse hallway. Instantly, Cassian lunged forward, his assault rifle barking in rhythmic, deadly bursts that filled the enclosed space with a deafening roar.
Lydia dropped to her knees inside the lift, her hands covering her ears, her mind focused entirely on the image of her cello. She heard the sound of bodies hitting the floor, the frantic screams of Vincent’s men as they were cut down in the fog, and the dominant, terrifying roar of Cassian’s voice leading the charge.
"Clear!" Matteo shouted from the hallway.
Lydia scrambled out of the lift, her hands sweeping across the floor until she found the smooth hardwood border of the living room. She stood up, her ears tracking the sound of heavy breathing toward the glass terrace doors.
"Vincent!" Cassian’s voice boomed through the room like a thunderclap.
"Stay back!" Vincent Romano screamed, his voice high-pitched with a sudden, frantic desperation. "Stay back, Moretti, or I swear to God I’ll drop it over the edge!"
May you like
Lydia froze. Through the broken glass of the terrace door, she could hear the howling wind of the storm outside. She could also hear the distinct, hollow resonance of aged Italian maple vibrating in the wind.
Vincent was standing on the open-air terrace, holding the Testore cello over the forty-two-story drop. One slip, one bullet, and the instrument would plunge into the dark abyss of Manhattan below.
