Chapter 9 - The Trap Springs

Three days later, the trap was sprung.

It was a Saturday morning. The sun was shining warmly over the manicured lawns of Vance Manor, where Clara and Sophia were planting yellow daisies in the garden patio. I watched them from the second-floor study window, my heart swelling with fierce, protective love.

My secure terminal beeped softly.

A high-priority notification from our corporate intelligence server lit up the screen: INCOMING SECURE TRANSMISSION FROM ZURICH FINANCIAL TRUST.

I sat down, clicking open the file.

It was an official, binding offer of emergency corporate restructuring and asset acquisition, backed by an anonymous holding entity registered in Liechtenstein called Vanguard Global Holdings. The terms were predatory: they offered to buy out sixty percent of Vance Maritime’s voting shares at a fraction of their actual market value, effectively seizing complete operational control of the company.

Attached to the offer was a digital signature and a meeting request: To finalize terms, principal representative Mr. Alistair Vance—senior trustee of Vanguard Global—requests an exclusive, private dinner meeting tonight at 8:00 PM at the private penthouse suite of the Grand Imperial Hotel.

Alister Vance.

A name I hadn't heard in a decade. An estranged cousin of my father’s who had been quietly banished from the family business thirty years ago for corporate espionage before disappearing into the murky underbelly of European high finance.

He wasn't just a corporate raider. He was the mastermind.

“Marcus,” I spoke into the encrypted intercom connecting my study to the bunker below. “Did you trace the origin of the transmission?”

“Confirmed,” Marcus’s voice crackled back, filled with adrenaline. “The Zurich ping matches the exact satellite relay of the phone call from three nights ago. Alistair Vance is physically in the city. He checked into the Grand Imperial penthouse two hours ago under diplomatic immunity status.”

“Get the tactical response team on standby,” I instructed quietly. “Surround the Grand Imperial. Block every exit, every service elevator, and every underground parking bay. Alistair thinks he’s coming to execute a hostile takeover tonight. He’s going to find out who really owns the board.”

“Julian,” Marcus cautioned, “he has diplomatic protection and private security. If this goes sideways—”

“It won't go sideways,” I said, closing my laptop and standing up, sliding my heavy gold signet ring firmly onto my finger. “Tonight, the ghosts of the Atlantic are coming home to pay their debts.”
