Chapter 3 - The Confession of Madison Reed

By the following morning, news of the arrest had shattered Seattle’s elite corporate circles. The Seattle Times ran a prominent business headline: CALDWELL FINANCIAL EXECUTIVE ARRESTED AT SEA-TAC IN MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FRAUD AND NARCOTICS SCHEME.
Inside the federal interrogation room at the United States Attorney’s Office, Madison Reed sat across from Special Agent Grant Ellis and Assistant US Attorney Sarah Vance. Her high-end designer clothes were gone, replaced by a gray detention jumpsuit. Her hair was unwashed, her eyes red-rimmed from hours of crying.
I watched the proceedings from behind the two-way glass window alongside Marcus Thorne.
"Ms. Reed," AUSA Vance said, setting a stack of financial documents on the metal table. "Your attorney is present. We are offering you one opportunity to enter a cooperation agreement. If you give us full, unedited testimony regarding Ethan Caldwell and Patricia Caldwell's financial fraud, we will consider reducing your charge from felony narcotics conspiracy to accessory after the fact."
Madison looked at her public defender, who gave her a stern, clear nod.
"I’ll talk," Madison sobbed, grabbing a paper tissue with trembling hands. "I’ll tell you everything! It was all Ethan! It was Ethan and his mother!"
"Start from the beginning," Grant instructed, opening his notepad.
"I started working as Ethan’s assistant fourteen months ago," Madison stammered. "Within three weeks, Patricia Caldwell called me to her home on Mercer Island. She didn't treat me like an employee. She took me out for lunch, bought me dresses, and told me that her son was trapped in a loveless marriage with a woman who was holding his career back."
Behind the glass, I felt a sharp chill. Patricia hadn't just tolerated the affair; she had actively recruited Madison to replace me.
"What did Patricia ask you to do?" AUSA Vance asked.
"She told me that if I kept Ethan happy, she would make sure I was taken care of," Madison admitted, her voice shaking. "She helped us rent the luxury condo downtown. She showed Ethan how to alter corporate expense reports so my travel expenses were billed under 'market research.' But three months ago, Ethan came to the apartment in a complete panic."
"Why was he panicking?" Grant asked.
"An internal auditor at Caldwell Financial started flagged four irregular wire transfers sent to Elegance Investments LLC," Madison revealed. "Ethan knew he was going to get caught within ninety days. That’s when Patricia came to the apartment with a plan."
"What was Patricia’s plan?"
"She said... she said Natalie had to be eliminated as a credible threat," Madison whimpered, looking down at the metal table in shame. "She said if Natalie was arrested for international drug trafficking, the corporate audit would look like Natalie was the one stealing money from Ethan to fund her drug habit. Patricia said no jury would believe a convicted drug mule over a heartbroken corporate executive."
I squeezed my eyes shut for a moment behind the two-way glass. Marcus Thorne laid a gentle, reassuring hand on my shoulder.
"The cruelty is astounding," Marcus whispered. "They were going to pin the stolen eight million dollars on you as well."
Inside the interrogation room, Grant pushed a photograph across the table. It was the photograph of the four hundred grams of narcotics seized at the airport.
"Where did the drugs come from, Madison?" Grant asked sharply.
"Patricia got them," Madison confessed, tears streaming down her face. "She bought them through an estate lawyer she used to work with in Vancouver. She brought the package to the house two nights ago. Ethan sewed it into Natalie's black bag while Natalie was downstairs taking a bath."
"And the trip to Tokyo?"
"It was supposed to be the trap," Madison sobbed. "Ethan was supposed to let Natalie walk through security first. When the dogs hit her bag, he was going to act shocked, call his mother, and then fly out with me to Thailand using fake passports Patricia had already ordered for us."
Grant stood up, gathering his documents. "Thank you, Ms. Reed. You just guaranteed Ethan and Patricia Caldwell a long stay in federal prison."
As Grant exited the interrogation room, he walked over to where Marcus and I were standing in the observation corridor.
"Did you hear enough, Nat?" Grant asked softly.
May you like
I looked at the two-way mirror, watching Madison bury her face in her hands.
"I heard everything I needed," I replied. "Now it's time to take back what's mine."
