Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

The main boardroom on twenty-eight was silent enough to hear a pin drop on the rug.

Charles Anderson sat at the head of the long mahogany table. To his right sat the company’s general counsel, a sharp-eyed woman named Victoria Vance. To his left sat three senior board members.

Standing near the floor-to-ceiling windows, her hands folded neatly behind her back, was Riley.

The heavy double doors opened, and Cara Whitmore, Zach Porter, and Richard Vance slid into the room.

All three of them looked like they were walking toward a firing squad. Zach’s tie was loose, Cara’s hands were shaking so hard she could barely hold her leather portfolio, and Richard Vance was sweating profusely through his collared shirt.

"Sit down," Charles said. His voice wasn't loud, but it possessed a weight that seemed to flatten the air in the room.

The three executives scrambled into chairs at the far end of the table, as far from Charles as possible.

"Mr. Anderson," Cara began, her voice high and panicked. "There has been a terrible misunderstanding! If I had known Miss Anderson was... was conducting an operational review—"

"Quiet," Victoria Vance, the general counsel, said coldly, opening a heavy black binder.

Riley stepped forward from the windows. She picked up a remote control and tapped the screen on the wall.

Instantly, the vast eighty-inch monitor illuminated with high-resolution images of invoices, bank accounts, and internal emails.

"For thirty days," Riley began, her voice smooth, articulate, and completely commanding, "I worked as an entry-level custodian under the alias Riley Hale. During that time, I observed multiple severe operational failures."

She tapped the remote. An image of Apex Facility Solutions LLC appeared on the screen.

"This is Apex Facility Solutions," Riley said, turning her sharp gaze onto Zach Porter. "A shell company created three years ago. Over thirty-six months, Apex billed Anderson Meridian Group two point four million dollars for specialized cleaning services."

Zach swallowed hard. "Miss Anderson... Apex was a legitimate contractor... we hired them to supplement—"

"Apex has no employees, Zach," Riley interrupted coldly. "You, Miss Whitmore, and Mr. Vance are the sole shareholders. You paid yourselves two point four million dollars while forcing our Tier-3 custodial staff to perform the work during unpaid overtime."

Cara squeezed her eyes shut, a tear of terror spilling down her cheek.

"Furthermore," Riley continued, tapping the screen again. A medical report from Swedish Medical Center appeared. "To maximize your profit margins on these fraudulent contracts, you denied proper personal protective equipment to our workers. Last night, Martha Evans—a custodian who has served this company faithfully for eleven years—was admitted to the ICU with chemical pneumonitis caused by inhaling toxic fumes in unventilated HVAC vaults."

Charles’s head snapped toward the screen. His eyes fixed on the medical report, then slowly turned to face Zach Porter and Cara Whitmore.

The fury in Charles Anderson’s face was something Riley had only seen twice in her life. It was a cold, absolute, terrifying anger that made the three fraudulent executives cringe in their chairs.

"Is this true?" Charles asked softly.

Nobody spoke. Richard Vance looked down at the table, his breath coming in ragged gasps.

"Victoria," Charles said quietly to the general counsel. "Are the federal authorities downstairs?"

"Two agents from the Department of Labor and four officers from the Financial Crimes Unit are waiting in the lobby, sir," Victoria replied smoothly.

"No!" Zach cried out, jumping from his chair. "Mr. Anderson, please! It was a mistake! We can pay the money back! We can cover the medical bills!"

Riley stepped directly into Zach’s path, exactly as she had stepped between Cara and Martha three days earlier.

"You spilt coffee on me, Zach," Riley said, her eyes burning like cold steel. "You looked at me while I was on my knees, and you laughed. You thought because I wore gray, I had no power. You thought because Martha was poor, she had no voice."

She stepped closer to him.

"You’re not paying the money back to the company, Zach," Riley whispered. "The company is seizing all your assets, liquidating Apex LLC, and transferring every single dollar into a permanent healthcare trust for Tier-3 employees."

Two police officers pushed open the double doors of the boardroom, followed by two federal agents in dark suits.

"Zachary Porter, Cara Whitmore, Richard Vance," the lead agent announced, pulling silver handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, and severe violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act. Step away from the table."

As the handcuffs clicked around Zach’s wrists, he looked at Riley, his face pale, weeping openly.

May you like

"Riley... please..." he begged.

Riley didn't say a word. She simply watched silently as the three executives were led out of the boardroom in shame, their footsteps fading down the marble corridor forever.
