Chapter 4 - The Shattered Illusion

The atmosphere inside my office turned ice-cold.

Diane stood up slowly, leaning heavily against the conference table. The arrogant, proud matriarch who had thrown my Christmas dinner in the garbage two days ago now looked utterly broken.

"Madison..." Diane whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "You told me Trevor wanted to settle down. You told me he was going to build a family nursery in your father’s old study."

"Mom, listen to me!" Madison panicked, grabbing Diane’s arm. "Claire is lying! She fabricated those photos! She’s doing this because she hates us!"

"The financial records don't lie, Madison," I said, sliding a certified court docket across the table. "Trevor has a foreclosure notice on his own condo, two vehicle repossessions, and an active freeze on his bank accounts. If Mom had transferred that deed to you on New Year’s Day, Trevor would have mortgaged the property within forty-eight hours. Within six months, both of you would have been thrown out on the street."

Diane pulled her arm away from Madison’s grip. She turned to me, her eyes red and desperate.

"Claire..." Diane pleaded, stepping toward my desk. "You're my daughter. You saved us before. Please... cancel this acceleration notice. Tear up the debt. We're family."

I looked at my mother—really looked at her. I saw the woman who had spent thirty years prioritizing Madison’s every whim, who had forgotten my birthdays, who had dismissed my legal career as 'a silly desk job,' and who had made me eat in my winter coat while my sister toasted to my exclusion.

"Family isn't a license to exploit people, Mom," I said softly. "You have thirty days to pay Apex Capital $384,000, or the property goes to public auction."

"Where am I supposed to get that kind of money?!" Diane cried.

"I suggest you ask Madison," I replied, standing up and closing my briefcase. "After all, she’s the one with the family future."
