Chapter 6 - The Confrontation

“Call Sarah Lin now!” I shouted to Marcus, scrambling to my feet despite the agonizing burn on my shoulder. “Tell her it’s an active murder attempt!”
Marcus was already on his phone, shouting coordinates to the state police dispatcher as he retrieved a small, licensed firearm from his belt. “David, wait for backup!”
“There’s no time!”
I didn't wait. I ran straight toward the open back door, picking up a heavy iron garden rake from the lawn as I sprinted.
I burst into the kitchen. The room was in complete disarray. Chairs were knocked over, dishes lay shattered on the tile floor, and blood splatters marked the wall leading toward the basement stairs.
“Elena!” I shouted.
A muffled scream came from below.
I rushed to the open basement door and bounded down the wooden stairs three at a time.
The basement was cold, dark, and smelled of damp concrete and rust. At the far end of the room, illuminated by a single hanging bulb, Julian had Elena pinned against a concrete pillar. He was wrapping a heavy plastic zip-tie around her wrists while a large, black duffel bag sat open on the floor beside them.
Elena was weeping, her face bruised, her body weakened from days of abuse.
“Let her go!” I screamed, swinging the iron rake with all my weight.
Julian reacted with terrifying speed. He ducked under the swing, the heavy iron tines smashing harmlessly into the concrete pillar. Before I could recover my stance, Julian slammed his elbow into my jaw.
Pain exploded across my vision. I hit the floor hard, slipping on the damp concrete. The rake clattered out of my reach.
Julian stood over me, his face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated malice. The calm, refined facade was completely gone. In its place was a monster.
“You just don't know when to die, do you, David?” Julian sneered, pulling a heavy tactical knife from a sheath at his waist. The steel blade caught the harsh overhead light. “I built a perfect life here. I had the money, the house, the perfect cover. And you ruined it in twelve hours.”
He lunged downward, aiming the blade straight for my chest.
I rolled to the side. The knife embedded itself deep into the wooden floorboard where my neck had been a second before. I kicked out with both legs, catching Julian squarely in the knee.
A sharp crunch echoed through the room. Julian roared in pain as his leg buckled, sending him crashing to the floor beside me.
Elena kicked at him with her bound feet, screaming, “David, get up!”
Julian slashed wildly with the knife, catching me across the forearm. Blood soaked through my sleeve, but the surge of adrenaline drowned out the pain. I tackled him, locking my hands around his wrists, pinned beneath his heavier frame as we fought frantically for control of the blade.
He was stronger than me, driving the point of the knife down, millimeter by millimeter, toward my throat.
“You’re weak, David,” Julian hissed in my ear, his breath hot and foul. “You couldn't keep your wife. You couldn't protect your daughter. And now you’re going to die in my basement.”
Suddenly, a loud deafening BANG shattered the air.
Julian stiffened. His eyes widened in shock.
A red stain rapidly bloomed across his shoulder. He dropped the knife, letting out a gut-wrenching howl as he collapsed backward onto the floor.
Standing at the top of the basement stairs was Marcus, his hands shaking slightly as he held his smoking handgun.

“Police are twenty seconds away,” Marcus panted, his eyes fixed on Julian. “It’s over, Thorne.”
In the distance, the loud, wailing chorus of police sirens and fire engine horns began to fill the night air.
