Chapter 2 - The Evidence in the Dark

The CT control room was illuminated only by the blue glow of four high-definition monitors displaying cross-sectional images of Sophie's body.
I stood beside the radiologist, Dr. Chen, as the machine hummed around my daughter in the scanner tube behind the lead-lined glass.
"There's the culprit for the arrest," Dr. Chen pointed a pencil at a shadow near the liver. "Grade three hepatic laceration. She was struck in the upper abdomen with immense force—looks like a heavy boot or a knee. She's bleeding into her peritoneal cavity."
"How much fluid?" I asked, my clinical training fighting a losing battle against the mounting horror in my chest.
"Roughly four hundred cc's. She needs an emergency laparotomy to cauterize the bleeder, Mara. We can't wait." Dr. Chen paused, moving the mouse to scroll through the skeletal scans. "And Mara... look at this."
He pointed to her ribcage.
On the digital rendering, three distinct fracture lines glowed along her left ribs. But right beside them were fainter, partially healed white ridges—the unmistakable signs of older fractures that had set months ago without medical attention.
"Multiple stages of healing," Dr. Chen whispered, looking up at me with horror in his eyes. "The posterior 6th and 7th ribs were broken at least six months ago. The left collarbone has a callus from a greenstick fracture that's about a year old."
I squeezed my eyes shut, my heart shattering into a thousand jagged pieces.
Six months ago, Daniel had claimed Sophie fell off her bicycle during a weekend trip to his beach house in Malibu. A year ago, he said she bumped into a door frame because she was "clumsy." Every single time I raised concerns or tried to take her to the clinic, he had gaslit me, called me an overbearing stepmother, and threatened to restrict my visitation rights under our temporary custody order.
He had systematically isolated her, tortured her, and hid the evidence behind the legal armor of his wealth and paternal status.
"Prep OR 4," I told Dr. Chen, opening my eyes. "Get Dr. Vance from Trauma Surgery. Tell him he has thirty minutes before she goes into hemorrhagic shock."
Ten minutes later, as Sophie was wheeled toward the surgical floor, Detective Miller from the Special Victims Unit stepped out of the elevator. She held a clear evidence bag containing Sophie’s cracked iPhone.
"Dr. Douglas?" Detective Miller asked. "I'm the lead detective assigned to the Daniel Cole case. We have officers securing his house right now."
"Have you listened to the audio files?" I asked, my voice tight.
"I listened to three of them in my cruiser on the way over," Miller’s face was grim, her mouth set in a hard, angry line. "That young girl is braver than most adults I've met. She timestamped every file. She spoke her own name, the date, and stated clearly that her father was coming up the stairs with a belt or a cane."
"Does it prove intent?"
"It proves torture, Dr. Douglas," Miller said flatly. "The file from tonight... she recorded him demanding she sign a statement saying you were abusing her, so he could gain full custody and terminate your adoption rights. When she refused, you can hear him striking her."
A cold, lethal stillness settled over my soul.

He didn't just want to hurt her; he wanted to destroy me. He wanted to use my adopted daughter as a weapon to strip me of my medical license, my reputation, and my freedom, ensuring I could never protect her again.
"He won't walk out on bail, Detective," I said, staring at the closed doors of OR 4. "I'm going to make sure he never sees the light of day again."
