Chapter 10 - The Horizon We Built

The sun was setting over the Hudson River, casting a brilliant wash of gold, amber, and violet across the skyline of Manhattan.

Far above the bustling streets, out on the sweeping wrap-around terrace of The Obsidian, the evening air was crisp and carried the faint, earthy scent of autumn.

The boys had finally worn themselves out running across the penthouse lawn with the new puppy, and the nanny had tucked them safely into their beds ten minutes earlier. The apartment was blissfully quiet, save for the gentle hum of the city far below.

Claire stood near the glass railing, resting her forearms on the cool metal, looking out over the glittering expanse of the river. She wore a simple ivory silk dress that caught the evening light, a sharp contrast to the damp, miserable dress she had worn the night her life had turned upside down at Rosewood Manor years ago.

Footsteps approached softly from behind.

Gabriel stepped out onto the terrace, carrying two crystal flutes filled with sparkling champagne. He handed one to Claire, his fingers brushing against hers, sending a familiar, electric warmth shooting up her arm.

“They’re finally asleep,” Gabriel said quietly, leaning against the railing beside her. “Though Leo tried to sneak his puppy under the blanket.”

Claire laughed, taking a small sip of the champagne. “Of course he did. He has your stubborn streak.”

“My stubborn streak mixed with your brilliance,” Gabriel corrected softly. “Dangerous combination.”

They stood in comfortable silence for a long moment, watching a barge cruise slowly down the river, its lights cutting a bright line through the dark water.

Gabriel turned his head, studying her profile in the amber glow of the terrace lights.

“You know,” Gabriel began, his voice dropping into a register that made her breath catch, “we never technically had a real wedding. Just a courthouse signature a lifetime ago, and then a divorce that nearly destroyed us both.”

Claire turned her head to look at him, her heart skipping a beat.

Gabriel reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. He didn't drop to one knee—he didn't need to. He simply opened it, revealing a ring that caught the starlight: a stunning, custom-designed platinum band inlaid with three flawless emerald-cut diamonds, flanked by delicate geometric architecture lines that symbolized the strength of her career and the unity of their family.

“Claire Hayes,” Gabriel whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “Will you marry me? Properly this time? No secrets, no syndicates, no hidden pasts. Just you, me, and our boys.”

Tears welled up in Claire’s eyes, hot and fast, but this time they were born of pure, unadulterated joy. She looked from the ring up into the gray-green eyes of the man who had torn down his own empire just to rebuild a world where she could be safe, loved, and entirely free.

“Yes, Gabriel,” Claire choked out, a brilliant smile breaking across her face. “Yes, a million times yes.”

Gabriel slid the ring onto her finger, sealing the promise with a deep, consuming kiss that tasted like forever.

Down below, the city of Manhattan stretched out into the night, vast and unending. But standing here on top of the world, wrapped in the arms of the man who had fought through hell to find her, Claire Kensington knew she didn't need an empire.

She had already built her home.
