Chapter 9 - The Sovereign Table

It was a beautiful, warm July evening in 2026. The high stone walls of our new Alexandria estate were covered in blooming white jasmine, and the air smelled of the sweet, rich aroma of a fresh summer feast.
The massive dining room table had been moved out onto the grand stone terrace, overlooking the lush green lawns that rolled gently down toward the edge of the river. The table was set for twelve—not for a crowd of affluent, fake neighbors or corporate executives looking to network, but for the people who had stood by me when the world was dark.
Agent Sarah Vance was there, laughing as she talked with my father about his recent retirement travels. Elena, who had successfully separated from her abuser and was now living in a beautiful apartment in the city with her young son, sat beside me, her face bright, healthy, and completely free of shadows.
My father stood at the head of the table, holding a glass of iced tea, his green eyes scanning the happy, vibrant faces of the people assembled.
"A toast," he said, his deep voice carrying over the gentle murmur of the river current below.
The table went completely quiet, everyone turning their heads toward the old colonel.
"To the tactical victories we win in the light," my father said, looking directly into my eyes with a love that had literally rebuilt my world from the ashes. "To the courage of a mother who refused to be broken, and to the only uniform that truly matters: the one we wear in our hearts when we protect the people we love."
"Salute!" the guests cheered, clinking their glasses together in a joyful, boisterous symphony that echoed across the lawn.

I looked down at my lap, where sixteen-month-old Clara was sitting, her small hands contentedly playing with a piece of warm artisanal bread. She looked up at me, her eyes bright, wide, and entirely untroubled by the dark history that had preceded her arrival.
I leaned down and kissed her soft cheek, breathing in the scent of baby powder and fresh summer air. The broken, terrified woman who had spent months crying silently in a dark bedroom in Oak Ridge was gone, entirely erased by the strength of the mother who had taken her place.
