CHAPTER 2: THE NAME HE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO HEAR

The officer didn’t move.
Neither did Brandon.
The room felt suddenly smaller, like the walls had leaned in to listen.
Dr. Morgan stepped back half a step—but her eyes stayed locked on the officer.
Recognition wasn’t casual.
It was procedural.
The officer exhaled slowly.
“Brandon Mitchell…” he repeated. “Or should I say… Daniel Cross?”
The name hit the room like a dropped scalpel.
I didn’t understand it.
But I felt Brandon understand it.
Because his entire body changed.
Not anger.
Not denial.
Collapse.
“That’s not my name,” he said immediately, too fast.
The officer tilted his head.
“You were supposed to be transferred out of Ohio five years ago.”
Silence swallowed everything.
The nurse beside me froze.
Dr. Morgan didn’t speak—but her expression tightened like someone confirming a diagnosis she had feared.
The officer stepped closer.
“We’ve been tracking a missing witness in a federal fraud and coercion case,” he said quietly. “A man who disappeared after a protected testimony scandal involving medical insurance manipulation and witness intimidation.”
My chest tightened.
Witness.
Federal.
Brandon—no, Daniel—took a step back.
“I’m not him,” he said again, weaker now.
But the officer didn’t blink.
“We have fingerprints on file. And your face matches every record we sealed.”
The second officer moved behind him.
Slow.
Controlled.
The kind of movement used when someone dangerous finally stops being theoretical.
May you like
I stared at the man I had married.
And realized I had never known him at all.
