Chapter 7 - The Arrest and the Aftermath

The victory at the DHS demonstration was absolute. Within forty-eight hours, Asterline Access Technologies was officially awarded the fifty-million-dollar federal contract.
However, Julian Mercer was not a man who accepted defeat quietly.
On Thursday afternoon, as Clara was finalizing contract documents in her top-floor executive suite, the door burst open.
Marcus Vance stepped inside, holding a secure tablet, his face grim. "Clara, we have a problem. Julian Mercer just held a press conference outside the federal courthouse downtown."
Clara stood up, gesturing for him to show her the feed.
On the screen, Julian stood surrounded by news cameras, holding a stack of legal documents.
"Asterline Access Technologies engaged in corporate espionage," Julian claimed falsely to the reporters. "They hired a former disgraced Titan employee, Ethan Calder, to steal our proprietary research files. We have filed criminal complaints with the FBI and are seeking an immediate freeze on Asterline’s federal contract!"
Clara’s eyes turned cold. Is Ethan in his lab? she signed rapidly.
"He was," Marcus signed back. "Federal agents just arrived downstairs with a search warrant for his workspace."
Clara didn't hesitate. She marched out of her office, down the executive elevator, and straight into the 14th-floor R&D lab.
Two FBI field agents were standing inside the lab, packing Ethan’s research hard drives into evidence bags. Ethan stood quietly beside his bench, his hands kept in front of him, looking calm despite the tense situation.
"Miss Whitmere," one of the agents said, recognizing her. "We have a federal warrant regarding alleged intellectual property theft from Titan Communications."
Clara stepped directly between the agents and Ethan. She pulled her phone from her coat, pulled up a pre-encrypted cloud file, and held it out to the lead agent.
Before you touch those drives, Agent, Clara signed, while Sarah—who had rushed down with her—translated aloud, I suggest you inspect the digital chain of custody records filed with the State Attorney General’s Corporate Crimes Division four days ago.
The lead agent blinked, taking her phone to review the documents.
As the agent read the screen, his expression shifted from stern suspicion to shock.
The file contained complete, unedited system logs of the physical transceiver Titan had installed in Asterline’s sub-basement, complete with Julian Mercer’s digital signature on the firmware source code. It also included a sworn affidavit from Titan’s former chief compliance officer, revealing that Julian had intentionally sabotaged Vocalis Labs nine years ago to suppress auditory-haptic tech.
"This... this shows Titan planted the intrusion hardware," the agent muttered, looking up at Clara.
Titan didn't just plant hardware, Clara signed smoothly. Julian Mercer committed federal wire fraud, corporate extortion, and perjury on national television thirty minutes ago.
The lead agent handed Clara’s phone back, turned to his partner, and closed the evidence bag.
"Unpack the drives," the lead agent ordered his partner. He then looked at Ethan. "Mr. Calder, I apologize for the disruption. It appears we were directed to the wrong address."
Ten minutes later, news cameras across the city broadcasted a live feed from Titan Communications' corporate headquarters downtown.
Julian Mercer was seen being led out of his corner office in handcuffs by federal marshals, facing charges of grand larceny, corporate wire fraud, and illegal surveillance.
As the television screen in Ethan’s lab showed Julian being shoved into the back of a police cruiser, Ethan let out a long, slow breath. Nine years of living under a dark cloud of false accusations and hidden fear evaporated into thin air.
He turned to Clara.
Without saying a word, Ethan stepped across the room, wrapped his arms around her waist, and pulled her into a tight, overwhelming hug.
Clara melted against him, resting her face against his neck, feeling the rapid, strong beat of his heart.
"It's over," Ethan whispered against her hair, his voice choked with emotion. "Natalie’s name is cleared. It's finally over."
May you like
Clara pulled back slightly, looking up into his eyes, her hands gently framing his face.
It’s not over, Ethan, she signed with a soft, radiant smile. It’s just beginning.
